The incident has sparked controversy and will \u200dbe discussed \u200din the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/investigators-scramble-to-recover-pandemic-small-business-support-lost-to-fraud\/\" title=\"Investigators rush to reclaim pandemic small business aid lost to fraud.\">upcoming congressional hearing<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A longtime journalist laid off by CBS News this year will speak out about her firing for the first time on Thursday at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2953079\/veteran-reporter-testify-congress-after-controversial-firing-cbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>hearing<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Congress\">Congress<\/a> and plans to criticize the network for taking files containing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-director-to-meet-with-house-gop-over-document-alleging-biden-criminal-scheme\/\" title=\"FBI Director to discuss alleged Biden criminal scheme with House GOP.\">confidential source information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine Herridge, a former senior investigative correspondent, will appear as a witness before a House Judiciary Committee\u2019s subcommittee hearing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/you-should-be-ashamed-reporter-scolds-kjp-for-refusing-to-call-on-him\/\" title=\"Reporter scolds KJP for not taking his question, demands shame.\">press freedom issues<\/a> and say that her former employer encroached on her rights, according to her opening statement, obtained by the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBS News\u2019 decision to seize my reporting records crossed a red line that I believe should never be crossed by any media organization,\u201d Herridge will say.<\/p>\n<p>Herridge had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wednesday-december-1st-2021\/\" title=\"Wednesday | December 1st, 2021\">high-profile role<\/a> at CBS News beginning in 2019 and, prior to that, had worked at Fox News since the 1990s. She became known for covering national security issues and, more recently, investigations into Joe Biden and Hunter Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Her firing became a source of controversy after several reports indicated that CBS News \u201cseized\u201d her items, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/veteran-reporter-to-testify-before-congress-after-controversial-firing-from-cbs\/\" title=\"Experienced journalist set to testify in front of Congress following tumultuous departure from CBS\">including confidential source information<\/a>, upon her termination. Herridge plans to explain what happened to lawmakers during Thursday\u2019s hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was laid\u00a0off in February, an incident reinforced in my mind the importance of protecting confidential sources,\u201d Herridge plans to say. \u201cCBS News locked me out of the building and seized hundreds of\u00a0pages of my reporting files, including confidential source information. Multiple sources said they were concerned that by working with me to expose government corruption and misconduct they would be identified and exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When CBS News was previously pressed by Congress on Herridge\u2019s dismissal, the network adamantly denied that it had \u201cseized\u201d her files and said it handled her termination in a normal manner.<\/p>\n<p>Human resources department staff retrieved Herridge\u2019s personal belongings from her office, such as books, clothing, and awards, to return to her, \u201cbut at no time did anyone review any of the files or other materials,\u201d a CBS News representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2953079\/veteran-reporter-testify-congress-after-controversial-firing-cbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a> to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContrary to several false press reports, absolutely none of Ms. Herridge\u2019s files were \u2018seized.\u2019 Rather, CBS acted to secure and protect the material in Ms. Herridge\u2019s office,\u201d the representative said, adding that the network returned her items after her union, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, took issue with CBS News about the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Herridge\u2019s concerns about her termination also come as she appeals a judge\u2019s decision in February to hold her in civil contempt for refusing to unmask the source of a series of reports she did at Fox News on a scientist\u2019s alleged ties to the Chinese military.<\/p>\n<p>The judge imposed an $800-per-day fine on Herridge until she provides the name of the source who disclosed to her private information about the scientist, but the fine is paused while the appeals process plays out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you go through major life events, as I have in recent weeks, losing your job, your health insurance, having your reporting files seized by your former employer, and being held in contempt of court, it\u00a0gives you clarity,\u201d Herridge will say.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Appearing alongside Herridge as witnesses on Thursday will be longtime journalist Sharyl Attkisson and Mary Cavallaro, the chief broadcast officer at the SAG-AFTRA News and Broadcast Department.<\/p>\n<p>Read Herridge\u2019s full opening statement below.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catherine Herridge, a former senior investigative correspondent let go by CBS News this year, will break her silence at a Congressional hearing on Thursday.
