Despite efforts to repeal the 1864 law, the legislature adjourned. Democrats and some Republicans,\u2063 including Governor\u2063 Katie Hobbs, called for the repeal to maintain \u2062the current 15-week law. The session ended with a failed attempt to bring a repeal bill to a \u200cvote. Following a pivotal Arizona Supreme Court ruling that essentially prohibited all abortions\u2062 in the \u200cstate, \u2063heightened tensions\u2062 gripped\u200b the state Capitol. Despite endeavors to revoke the longstanding \u200c1864 law, the \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-depth-we-had-to-take-action-new-mexico-referendum-project-aims-to-rescind-six-progressive-laws-using-rights-granted-in-state-constitution\/\" title=\"New Mexico Referendum Project aims to repeal six progressive laws using state constitution rights.\">legislative session concluded<\/a> without a successful repeal. Democratic\u200d and certain Republican figures, including Governor Katie\u200c Hobbs, advocated for \u2063upholding the existing 15-week law. However, \u200da motion \u200cto vote on a repeal bill fell short as the session \u200dcame to an \u2062end.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 After Tuesday\u2019s Arizona Supreme Court ruling essentially banning all abortions in the state, the state legislature adjourned on Wednesday despite attempts to get a motion to repeal the 1864 law up for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Katie Hobbs, as well as other Democrats and a handful of Republicans, have called for the legislature to repeal the law in order to allow for the current 15-week law to remain in place for the time being. Many Democrats have also been critical of the 15-week abortion law, but have said that it\u2019s preferable to the alternative, which only allows abortion if a mother\u2019s health is at risk regardless of number of weeks into a pregnancy. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Rep. Matt Gress, R-Phoenix, motioned to bring Rep. Stephanie Stahl-Hamilton\u2019s, D-Tucson, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/legtext\/56leg\/2R\/bills\/HB2677P.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 2677<\/a><\/strong> that would repeal the abortion ban law up for a vote by bypassing committee and going straight to a floor vote. However, another Republican then motioned to go to recess, which ended up passing through a voice vote. <\/p>\n<p>However, this recess let to a tense moment on the House floor, in which Democratic lawmakers chanted phrases such as \u201cSave women\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second attempt after recess to make a motion also failed, as Majority Leader Leo Biasiucci, R-Lake Havasu, motioned to adjourn and a roll call vote ended up leading to lawmakers going home for the week. Gress was the only Republican not to vote to adjourn, but a vacancy on the Democratic side prevented a tie vote from occurring to continue working. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that the Supreme Court decision yesterday was extreme,\u201d Stahl-Hamilton said on the floor, saying that \u201cpeople will die\u201d if the law is not repealed before it goes into effect. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to take up this issue very quickly and Arizonans deserve to see their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ariz-dems-fear-letting-voters-choose-will-deal-death-blow-to-biden\/\" title=\"Arizona Democrats worry that allowing voters to choose their preferred candidate in the upcoming election could potentially be a fatal blow to Biden.\">elected officials work<\/a> on this,\u201d the Republican told reporters. <\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Ben Toma called the motion commotion \u201cappallingly childish behavior\u201d by Democrats in a statement, adding there is more time needed to sort the issue out. Now that state budget negotiations have started, the legislature is now only meeting once per week. <\/p>\n<p>On the Senate side, a similar move by Democrats was attempted but the chamber also ended up adjourning. <\/p>\n<p>Arizona Republican lawmakers are split on how to best navigate this, as there is a proposed constitutional amendment that is likely to hit the ballot in November anyway. Proponents of the amendment say it would cover abortions up to \u201cfetal viability,\u201d while opponents say it opens the door to very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">late-term abortions<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>While some members are calling for a repeal of the 1864 law only permitting abortion if a mother\u2019s health is at risk, others like the Arizona Freedom Caucus, are in support of the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, it seems that some are choosing to reject the fundamental, core principle of protecting life,\u201d the state Freedom Caucus said in a statement on Tuesday. \u201cSome have chosen instead to jump on the bandwagon to legalize unrestricted abortions for the first 15 weeks of pregnancy \u2014 a position that would permit 95% of all existing abortions to continue.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the governor is still pushing for the legislature to take action on the matter. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s legislative action\u00a0was unconscionable.
