She highlighted that despite economic \u2063indicators showing \u2064positive trends, many voters remain fixated on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bernie-sanders-wants-more-spending-as-dems-struggle-to-address-inflation\/\" title=\"Bernie Sanders Wants More Spending As Dems Struggle To Address Inflation\">economic worries<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Margaret Sullivan, a corporate media veteran who now enjoys a cushy gig at Columbia Journalism School, complained during a Monday webinar that voters are irrationally concerned about the economy while suggesting instead that the \u201cexistential\u201d concern of the 2024 election is Donald Trump\u2019s alleged threat to \u201cdemocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the webinar hosted by the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sullivan suggested concerns about the economy are overblown because \u201cthe economy is doing very, very well right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, everybody says in these polls, as poll respondents, that they\u2019re so concerned about the economy. Well, the economy is doing very, very well right now. Inflation is low, unemployment is low, growth is strong, even the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner was lower in 2023 than it was the year before,\u201d Sullivan said. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/208104\/average-price-of-a-thanksgiving-dinner\/#:~:text=2023%20saw%20the%20average%20price,amounted%20to%2064.05%20U.S.%20dollars.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data<\/a> from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed an average Thanksgiving dinner in 2023 cost $61.17 compared to $64.05 in 2022. What Sullivan left out, however, is that a Thanksgiving dinner cost less than $55 during the entire duration of Donald Trump\u2019s presidency, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/thanksgiving-dinner-cost-relief-but-still-high-relative-to-recent-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Farm Bureau Federation<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/28\/democrats-have-a-new-joke-about-bankrupting-donald-trump-along-with-the-rest-of-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Democrats Have A New Joke About Bankrupting Donald Trump Along With The Rest Of America<\/strong><\/a><strong>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut somehow everyone wants to talk about how bad the economy is and you know, I don\u2019t think that we\u2019re getting that story across either, although I actually have my doubts about whether that\u2019s really on people\u2019s minds,\u201d she continued. <\/p>\n<p>The current <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national average<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/20\/record-high-gas-prices-dont-bother-biden-because-they-restrict-your-use-of-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gas<\/a> is $3.62 per gallon. A Gallup <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GallupNews\/status\/1762565724751475007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a> from February found 61 percent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/half-of-americans-disapprove-of-biden-handling-of-border-crisis\/\" title=\"Half Of Americans \u2018Disapprove\u2019 Of Biden Handling Of Border Crisis\">voters disapprove<\/a> of Biden\u2019s handling of the economy. Inflation also notched another year-over-year increase in March, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new data<\/a>. Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/strgnfibcom.blob.core.windows.net\/nfibcom\/SBET-Mar-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent report<\/a> from the National Federation of Independent Business found that small business optimism hit its lowest level since 2012. <\/p>\n<p>While dismissing Americans\u2019 concerns about the economy, Sullivan said she thinks the 2024 election is an \u201cexistential one\u201d because if Trump is elected again, he will start \u201ctaking down some of the restraints and the guardrails that kept him and his administration from doing as much harm to democracy as they could have the first time around.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"It's not the Odds, It's the Stakes\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rQCWoBN4OVw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sullivan also suggested journalists should stop worrying about looking partisan and instead should focus on how a second Trump term would allegedly hurt \u201cdemocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s so far afield to have our coverage reflect that democracy issues and truth are important,\u201d she said, insisting \u201cwe don\u2019t need to be so defensive all the time about orienting coverage that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan claimed the media have historically taken \u201crefuge\u201d in trying to treat political candidates the same with their coverage, but doubled down on her <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/17\/dear-washington-post-journalists-the-public-interest-isnt-the-same-thing-as-your-political-preference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">belief<\/a> that corporate media should no longer apply those traditional journalistic principles of objectivity to Trump. \u201cThese candidates are not the same at all and so to equalize them is actually very, very misleading,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a Monday webinar hosted by the Washington, D.C., Margaret Sullivan, a corporate media veteran turned Columbia Journalism School faculty member, criticized voters for overly focusing on the economy.
