The \u2063vote\u2062 prevented the extension of Section 702 \u200dof the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Concerns about unauthorized surveillance of \u200bAmerican citizens were raised, emphasizing past misuses of surveillance authorities by federal agencies. Speaker Johnson proposed safeguards, but\u200b doubts persist regarding the \u200bbill&#8217;s true intentions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Nineteen Congressional Republicans helped tank a procedural vote on Wednesday, preventing the House from advancing a bill \u2014 backed by \u201cRepublican\u201d Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 that would renew government spying on American citizens without a warrant. <\/p>\n<p>The 193-228 vote blocked Rep. Laurel Lee\u2019s, R-Fla., Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act, which would have extended Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act for five years. Section 702 has allowed the government to carry out warrantless surveillance of American citizens in violation of the Fourth Amendment and will expire on April 19 without further action from Congress. A whopping 193 Republicans voted to advance the bill and thus the rogue security state.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-316338569\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d3b42106a75114e7c1445833fded4d35 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d3b42106a75114e7c1445833fded4d35\"><\/div>\n<p>Section 702, enacted in America\u2019s post-9\/11 era in 2008, allows federal agencies to surveil foreign nationals without a warrant. The security state has habitually used it to spy on innocent Americans, however, with bogus justifications about national security and foreign intel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFISA authorities have been used to violate the law more than 278,000 times by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-biden-admin-considering-using-private-firms-to-conduct-warrantless-surveillance-of-u-s-citizens\/\" title=\"CNN: Biden Admin Considering Using Private Firms To Conduct Warrantless Surveillance Of U.S. Citizens\">national security state<\/a>, and there has yet to be any consequences for this illegal activity by our government,\u201d Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said in a Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4586123-these-republicans-voted-block-spy-powers-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>. According to the liberal Brennan Center for Justice, the FBI, CIA, NSA, and National Counterterrorism Center conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/why-congress-must-reform-fisa-section-702-and-how-it-can\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 200,000 warrantless searches<\/a> every year to review Americans\u2019 private communications.<\/p>\n<p>Data collected through warrantless surveillance can be used, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/issues\/national-security\/warrantless-surveillance-under-section-702-fisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACLU<\/a> puts it, \u201cto prosecute and imprison people, even for crimes that have nothing to do with national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI infamously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/11\/russia-hoaxer-adam-schiff-says-he-hopes-intel-community-will-hide-info-from-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spied<\/a> on former President Donald Trump\u2019s campaign after obtaining a surveillance warrant through a secret FISA court to target staffer Carter Page. The warrant was based on faulty information and left out key details that blew up the FBI\u2019s basis for surveilling Page in the first place.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1fae582220bbd16d9d6f6cb29c3fb63b fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1fae582220bbd16d9d6f6cb29c3fb63b\"><\/div>\n<p>As the Brennan Center for Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/why-congress-must-reform-fisa-section-702-and-how-it-can\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/fisa-section-702-civil-rights-abuses\">many<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/pclob-report-reveals-new-abuses-fisa-section-702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other examples<\/a>, the government has performed baseless searches for the communications of <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4110850-fbi-improperly-used-702-surveillance-powers-on-us-senator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">members of Congress<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.gov\/assets\/documents\/702%20Documents\/declassified\/22nd_Joint_Assessment_of_FISA_702_Compliance_CLEARED_REDACTED_FOR_PUBLIC_RELEASE.pdf#page=60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">journalists<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligence.gov\/assets\/documents\/702%20Documents\/declassified\/21\/2021_FISC_Certification_Opinion.pdf#page=29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19,000 donors to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dem-cheri-bustos-diverts-post-office-aid-cash-to-own-campaign\/\" title=\"Dem Cheri Bustos Diverts Post Office Aid Cash to Own Campaign\">congressional campaign<\/a><\/a>. The FBI has performed \u201ctens of thousands\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/documents.pclob.gov\/prod\/Documents\/OversightReport\/e9e72454-4156-49b9-961a-855706216063\/2023%20PCLOB%20702%20Report%20(002).pdf#page=157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unlawful searches<\/a>\u201crelated to civil unrest,\u201d including searches targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/documents.pclob.gov\/prod\/Documents\/OversightReport\/e9e72454-4156-49b9-961a-855706216063\/2023%20PCLOB%20702%20Report%20(002).pdf#page=197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">141 people<\/a> protesting the murder of George Floyd and more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligence.gov\/assets\/documents\/702%20Documents\/declassified\/21\/2021_FISC_Certification_Opinion.pdf#page=29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20,000 people<\/a> affiliated with a group suspected of involvement in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Most recently \u2014 and despite procedural changes implemented by the FBI to stem abuses \u2014 FBI agents performed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligence.gov\/assets\/documents\/702%20Documents\/declassified\/2023\/FISC_2023_FISA_702_Certifications_Opinion_April11_2023.pdf#page=86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improper searches<\/a> for the private communications of a U.S. senator, a state senator, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-supreme-court-allows-arrest-of-runaway-democrats\/\" title=\"Texas Supreme Court Allows Arrest of Runaway Democrats\">state court judge<\/a> who reported alleged civil rights violations by a police chief to the FBI.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaker Johnson said the renewal would include safeguards to prevent similar instances \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t seem to pass the smell test.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a critically important piece of our intelligence and law enforcement in this country because it allows us to continue killing Hamas terrorists,\u201d Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/house-conservatives-tank-fisa-bill-in-blow-to-speaker-johnson-5626218?src_src=RTNews&#038;src_cmp=rtbreaking-2024-04-10-4&#038;est=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa+0yVQcEzMfN6LYcv2lQGKA0yEwDRjxnDT8PiSutFoYjw6SRhA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, according to The Epoch Times. \u201cIt allows us to track shipments of the least illicit chemicals used to make fentanyl, it allows us to protect US warships from attacks by Houthi rebels, allows us to stop China from stealing American intellectual property, and it prevents ransomware attacks against American companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson reportedly claimed there would be amendments to protect Americans from \u201cpoliticized FBI queries\u201d and to \u201cprevent another Russia hoax debacle, among many other important reforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-67a80478eb403132e393eafbccba5b4f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-67a80478eb403132e393eafbccba5b4f\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cNo more Steele dossiers; no more of the intelligence community relying on fake news reports to order a FISA order; no more collusion; these changes will make sure that that doesn\u2019t happen,\u201d Johnson added.<\/p>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee supported an amendment that would require officials to obtain a warrant if the communications they\u2019re targeting include an American citizen, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/house-sinks-johnson-backed-fisa-renewal-trump-push\">Fox News<\/a>, but Johnson reportedly opposed it.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who support and called upon Congress to renew warrantless searches on Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/12\/12\/intel-experts-who-falsely-discredited-hunter-biden-laptop-call-to-extend-warrantless-spying-on-americans\/\">are<\/a> the same \u201cexperts\u201d who infamously discredited Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop in 2020 as Russian disinformation, which led to mass censorship of those who tried to share the story. Their fearmongering about national security in light of political and unconstitutional abuses rings hollow.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the Republican representatives who <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2024\/roll108.xml\">voted against<\/a> abridging constitutional liberties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rep.
