Lawmakers might seek an extension before \u200cApril\u200b 19.\u2062 Representatives emphasized the need for a warrant mandate to access\u200c data on U.S. citizens, highlighting concerns over FBI surveillance practices.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the GOP-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/u-s-house-of-representatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House<\/a> blocked the advancement of a bill that sought to reauthorize Section 702 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/fisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/laurellee.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/rep-laurel-lee-introduces-risa-act-significant-reforms-fisa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five years<\/a> and implement reforms on the controversial spy tool.<\/p>\n<p>The vote tanked a rule to bring the legislation up for consideration, creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blm-leader-assures-l-a-county-d-a-gascon-we-have-your-back\/\" title=\"BLM Leader Assures L.A. County D.A. Gasc\u00f3n: \u2018We Have Your Back\u2019\">major setback<\/a> for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who vouched for the bill after former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-says-kill-fisa-as-lawmakers-consider-surveillance-reauthorization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> lawmakers to reject the spy program used to monitor non-U.S. citizens abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen Republicans joined with all voting Democrats to oppose moving forward. The final tally was <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2024\/roll108.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">193-228<\/a>. Ten members, including six Republicans and four Democrats, did not vote.<\/p>\n<p>What leadership will do next is not immediately clear, but it is possible lawmakers will go for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/house-approves-defense-spending-package-surveillance-program-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another extension<\/a> with no reforms. They have until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/04\/09\/congress-fisa-surveillance-deadline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 19<\/a> to reauthorize Section 702 before it sunsets.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the lawmakers who opposed the bill demanded the addition of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/4584117-fisa-spy-powers-rules-warrant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warrant requirement<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/teachers-compile-list-of-parents-who-question-racial-curriculum-plot-war-on-them\/\" title=\"Teachers Compile List Of Parents Who Question Racial Curriculum, Plot War On Them\">government officials seeking<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/biggs.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-biggs-introduces-major-legislation-end-warrantless-surveillance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access data concerning U.S. citizens<\/a> \u2014 ostensibly for law enforcement purposes \u2014 that gets swept up in minoring of foreign persons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no shortage of spying authority abuses by the weaponized FBI. Get a warrant,\u201d Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAndyBiggsAZ\/status\/1778110486124319200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a post to X, after noting\u00a0\u201c3.4 million warrantless searches of Americans\u2019 private communications. 278,000 improper searches on American citizens. 19,000 improper searches of donors to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/justice-alito-moves-up-deadline-for-supreme-court-briefing-in-pennsylvania-lawsuit-to-flip-the-election\/\" title=\"Justice Alito Moves Up Deadline For Supreme Court Briefing in Pennsylvania Lawsuit to Flip the Election\">congressional candidate<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also pushed for a warrant amendment to \u201cprotect\u201d Americans. \u201cFISA bill says FBI has to notify Congressmembers to spy on us, but regular Americans can be spied on without a warrant?\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/1777879620068442577\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who is again running for the presidency, posted to Truth Social earlier in the day voicing opposition. \u201cKILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME, AND MANY OTHERS. THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN!!!\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/112245329328818599\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, along with his initials.<\/p>\n<p>The former president has criticized the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-to-use-private-firms-to-surveil-service-members-social-media-accounts-for-concerning-behavior-report\/\" title=\"Biden To Use Private Firms To Surveil Service Members\u2019 Social Media Accounts For \u2018Concerning Behavior\u2019: Report\">surveillance tool<\/a> ever since it emerged that the FBI snooped on his 2016 campaign aide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-fbi-spied-on-carter-page-now-hes-suing-them-for-75-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carter Page<\/a>, using an unverified dossier to obtain warrants under a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/4463961-house-unveils-warrantless-surveillance-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different part of FISA, Section 701<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspan\/status\/1778076099651444805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> reporters he looked forward to discussing the FISA issue with Trump, saying the former president is \u201cnot wrong\u201d about its misuse.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The FISA 702 reauthorization legislation contains reforms that would \u201cactually kill the abuses\u201d directed at Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign, Johnson insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are massive new, for example, criminal and civil penalties for using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-legislature-introduces-first-in-nation-resolution-to-protect-against-democrat-court-packing\/\" title=\"Arizona Legislature Introduces First-In-Nation Resolution To Protect Against Democrat 'Court Packing'\">opposition research<\/a> or leaking FISA applications or illegal spying.
