She found the idea intriguing after hearing it from \u200ba celebrity but recognized its limitations, as it\u200c would only benefit those currently paying \u200btaxes.\u200b While some progressive Democrats support reparations, it faces challenges gaining widespread\u2062 approval across the United States. Democratic \u2064Representative Jasmine\u200b Crockett of Texas proposed a tax exemption for black individuals as reparations. Despite its appeal, she acknowledged that this measure would solely \u2063assist those presently paying taxes. Although some progressive Democrats endorse reparations, it encounters hurdles in securing broad acceptance nationwide.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Democratic lawmaker proposed exempting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">black people<\/a> from paying taxes as a form of reparations last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas said on an episode of \u201cThe Black Lawyers Podcast\u201d that a celebrity \u2013 she could not remember who \u2013 inspired her to look at exempting black people from paying taxes, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/10\/us-news\/democrat-congresswoman-suggests-black-people-be-exempt-from-paying-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI don\u2019t know that that\u2019s \u2026 necessarily a bad idea,\u201d Crockett remembered thinking when she heard the proposal. \u201cOne of the things they propose is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time because \u2026 that puts money back in your pocket.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crockett said that a tax exemption may be a more palatable reparations solution to get behind rather than \u201cactually giving out dollars.\u201d The shortfall is that the proposal would only help those black people who are currently paying taxes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you do the no tax thing, for people that are already, say, struggling and not paying taxes in the first place \u2014 \u201d Crockett said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Progressive Democrats have backed reparations as a way to pay black Americans for the United States\u2019 history of slavery for years, though the proposal has failed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-democrats-try-to-pack-the-supreme-court-if-roe-v-wade-is-overturned\/\" title=\"Will Democrats Try to Pack the Supreme Court if Roe v. Wade Is Overturned?\">gain popular support<\/a>. Even in deep blue California, nearly 60% of voters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nearly-60-of-california-voters-oppose-cash-reparations-for-slavery-poll\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  they opposed such a policy. Just 28% of California voters support it, according to a September poll by the University of California Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Elected Democrats have continued to push the policy, however. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul in December <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-york-governor-kathy-hochul-signs-bill-creating-task-force-to-consider-race-based-reparations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">signed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  legislation creating a commission to study the issue. The bill set forth a nine-member committee tasked with examining \u201cthe institution of slavery\u201d and making \u201cdeterminations regarding compensation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In January, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) called for reparations in a post on X. Bush said that the United States \u201cowes\u201d the descendants of slaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1712759107458000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2Tu_bbgaIzPZlwVTiisdPO\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur country owes \u2013 OWES \u2013 a debt to the descendants of enslaved Black people, not just for slavery, but for what followed, like Black Codes, red lining, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cori-bush-demands-reparations-gets-a-virtual-earful-instead\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThat\u2019s why I introduced my Reparations NOW resolution. This country has an obligation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aside from its unpopularity with Americans, reparations have faced other hurdles, such as questions over legality and who would qualify for the special treatment.
