Now She\u2019s Facing Major Jail Time.\">assistant principal<\/a>\u200c at a Virginia elementary school,\u200b Ebony Parker, 39, was charged with eight counts of child abuse and reckless\u2062 disregard for human\u200c life after a 6-year-old student shot teacher Abby Zwerner at Richneck Elementary School in\u2064 Newport News.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>The former elementary school assistant principal in <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Virginia<\/a>, where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2006344\/six-year-old-student-shoots-teacher-at-elementary-school-in-newport-news-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>6-year-old <\/a>student <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>shot<\/a> his teacher in the hand and chest, has been indicted by a<a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/indictment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> grand jury <\/a>on eight child abuse charges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/672500\/unprecedented-situation-newport-news-police-chief-says-6-year-old-shot-teacher-with-legally-purchased-gun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ebony Parker<\/a>, 39, was charged in the case on March 11, according to records that were unsealed on Tuesday, with child abuse and reckless disregard for human life, which is a <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>class six felony<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The charges come after a 6-year-old brought a gun to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/771253\/virginia-school-officials-warned-6-year-old-had-a-weapon-prior-to-shooting-officials-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Richneck Elementary School<\/a> on Jan. 6, 2023, and shot his teacher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2301997\/virginia-teacher-shot-by-6-year-old-student-no-longer-working-at-school-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Abby Zwerner<\/a>. (AP Photo\/Denise Lavoie, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Under Virginia law, a parent, guardian, or person responsible for the care of a minor who \u201cwillfully\u201d or due to \u201cwillful omission\u201d permits serious injury to the life and health of another minor and is \u201cso gross, wanton, and culpable as to show reckless disregard for human life\u201d is guilty of a Class 6 felony.  <\/p>\n<p>Zwerner was hospitalized after the shooting for two weeks and had multiple surgeries on her hand and chest. She has also brought a $40 million lawsuit against the school over the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Deja Taylor, the boy\u2019s mother who owned the firearm, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for using marijuana <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2131125\/virginia-mother-of-6-year-old-who-shot-his-teacher-will-plead-guilty-to-new-federal-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>while owning a firearm<\/a>. Taylor also lied about her drug use when purchasing the gun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The grand jury that indicted Parker is expected to release a detailed report on their findings on Wednesday, but it is not clear whether other officials will be charged. <\/p>\n<p>Parker has been listed as a \u201cfugitive\u201d in court records, according to documents obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilotonline.com\/2024\/04\/09\/richneck-assistant-principal-charged-with-child-neglect-in-6-year-olds-shooting-of-teacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the <em>Virginian-Pilot<\/em><\/a>.
