This decision\u200c has triggered debates among officials and groups, intensifying discussions on abortion rights in \u200dArizona.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The Arizona Supreme Court came down with a major abortion ruling on Tuesday, upholding a law passed in 1864 that outlaws all abortions in the state except when the mother\u2019s life is at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The case made its way to the state\u2019s highest court after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chinese-american-group-on-essential-race-concept-racist-repressive-discriminatory\/\" title=\"Chinese-American Group On Essential Race Concept: \u2018Racist, Repressive, Discriminatory\u2019\">appeals court ruled<\/a> in December 2022 that doctors could not be prosecuted under the 160-year-old abortion ban that went into effect before Arizona was a state. The state Supreme Court ruled 4-2 that the law \u201cis now enforceable\u201d and can take effect in 14 days pending any additional legal challenges, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/09\/us\/arizona-abortion-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. The law mandates that anyone who aids an abortion, except in the case of saving the mother\u2019s life, be punished by two to five years in prison, AZ Central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/arizona\/2024\/04\/09\/arizona-abortion-law-state-supreme-court-upholds-near-total-ban\/73251148007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, a Republican, signed a 15-week limit into law in 2022, which came just three months before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, opening the door for states to enact their own limitations or bans on abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe celebrate this enormous victory for unborn children and their mothers. Reinstating Arizona\u2019s pro-life law will protect more than 11,000 babies annually at all stages of pregnancy while providing an exception for the life of the mother,\u201d Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/unborn-babies-their-mothers-protected-in-arizona-for-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThis includes babies who have heartbeats, babies who can feel pain, and babies who can smile and suck their thumbs. Today\u2019s state Supreme Court decision is a major advancement in the fight for life in Arizona.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Arizona Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs signed an executive order giving the state\u2019s attorney general, who is currently a Democrat, the power to enforce abortion laws. Attorney General Kris Mayes has vowed not to enforce any limitations or bans on abortion and said shortly after the state Supreme Court ruling that its decision is \u201can affront to freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Court has risked the health and lives of Arizonans,\u201d Mayes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/09\/us\/arizona-abortion-ban.html\">said<\/a>. \u201cToday\u2019s decision to reimpose a law from a time when Arizona wasn\u2019t a state, the Civil War was raging, and women couldn\u2019t even vote will go down in history as a stain on our state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hobbs also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorHobbs\/status\/1777756501974934007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the decision represents \u201ca dark day in Arizona\u201d and vowed that she \u201cwon\u2019t stop fighting until we have secured the right to abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the abortion decision, Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake released a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KariLake\/status\/1777763769890071022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> saying she opposed the state Supreme Court\u2019s ruling and called on the governor and legislature \u201cto come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are already using the ruling to pit their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-signs-memorandum-backpedaling-on-president-trumps-abortion-policies\/\" title=\"Joe Biden signs memorandum backpedaling on President Trump\u2019s abortion policies\">pro-abortion policies<\/a> against what they describe as \u201cextreme abortion laws\u201d in some states. The Biden campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1777755420498461062\">posted<\/a> on X showing side-by-side videos of Trump\u2019s Monday statement on abortion \u2014 in which the former president said laws should be left up to the states \u2014 with an MSNBC report of the Arizona Supreme Court ruling. The Biden campaign said the 160-year-old abortion law \u201cis now enforceable because Trump ended Roe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-releases-long-awaited-abortion-position-says-policies-should-be-left-to-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a video statement<\/a> on Monday morning where he came out against federal limitations on abortion and said the issue should be left up to the states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land. Those pushing for pro-abortion policies say the initiative has already received enough signatures to appear on the November ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona, a vital battleground state in the 2024 election, has been polling in Trump\u2019s direction as the former president focuses on immigration and the border crisis.
