Waltz Blasts \u2018Genocide Olympics\u2019 Corporate Sponsors: \u2018Preach Social Justice\u2019 but \u2018Cower to Authoritarians\u2019\">human rights worldwide<\/a>,\u201d \u201cbring torturers to justice,\u201d \u201c[c]hange oppressive laws,\u201d and \u201cfree people jailed just for voicing their opinion,\u201d referred to Walid Daqqah, a man who helped brutally torture and murder a young Israeli, simply as a \u201cwriter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe death in custody of Walid Daqqa, a 62-year-old Palestinian writer who was the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jails after 38 years of imprisonment, is a cruel reminder of Israel\u2019s disregard for Palestinians\u2019 right to life,\u201d the organization posted on X.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The death in custody of Walid Daqqa, a 62-year-old Palestinian writer who was the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jails after 38 years of imprisonment, is a cruel reminder of Israel\u2019s disregard for Palestinians\u2019 right to life \u2b07\ufe0f<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hSz0gdZgVj\">https:\/\/t.co\/hSz0gdZgVj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Amnesty International (@amnesty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amnesty\/status\/1777390873518489613?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 8, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/04\/israel-opt-death-in-custody-of-walid-daqqah-is-cruel-reminder-of-israels-disregard-for-palestinians-right-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> on the death, the organization downplayed Daqqah\u2019s crimes, ignoring what happened to 19-year-old Israeli soldier Moshe Tamam in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Daqqah and three other men kidnapped Tamam to bring him to the Syrian Arab Republic, Israel National News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.israelnationalnews.com\/news\/372150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. They kept Tamam for two days before deciding to kill him. When his body was found, authorities discovered that Tamam\u2019s eyes had been gouged out and some of his body parts had been cut off, including castration, The Jewish Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/world\/amnesty-describes-death-of-terrorist-who-ordered-teens-murder-as-heart-wrenching-g7xhem7u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. This torture was done before Tamam was killed. A gunshot to the head is what killed him.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is mentioned in Amnesty International\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the organization accused Israel of human rights violations because Israel didn\u2019t release Daqqah early due to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-pfizer-be-charged-for-mislabeling-vaccine-side-effects\/\" title=\"Will Pfizer Be Charged for Mislabeling Vaccine Side Effects?\">bone marrow cancer<\/a>. Daqqah was originally sentenced to life in prison but that sentence was reduced to 37 years, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/amnesty-international-urges-israel-return-body-ailing-palestinian-who-died-2024-04-08\/\">reported<\/a>. Daqqah was then discovered to be distributing cell phones to prisoners (Amnesty International claimed it was so they could call their families), and he was sentenced to two more years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is heart-wrenching that Walid Daqqah has died in Israeli custody despite the many calls for his urgent release on humanitarian grounds following his 2022 diagnosis with bone marrow cancer and the fact that he had already completed his original sentence,\u201d said Erika Guevara-Rosas, the organization\u2019s senior director for research, advocacy, policy, and campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalid Daqqah\u2019s death is a cruel reminder of Israel\u2019s systematic medical neglect and disregard for Palestinian prisoners\u2019 rights,\u201d Guevara-Rosas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/news\/world\/amnesty-describes-death-of-terrorist-who-ordered-teens-murder-as-heart-wrenching-g7xhem7u\">added<\/a>. \u201cFor Daqqah and his family, the last six months in particular were an endless nightmare, during which he was subjected to torture or other ill-treatment, including beatings and humiliation by the Israeli Prison Service, according to his lawyer. He was not permitted a phone call with his wife since 7 October. His final appeal for parole on humanitarian grounds was rejected by the Israeli Supreme Court, effectively sentencing him to die behind bars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization also claimed that Daqqah wasn\u2019t provided adequate medical treatment or \u201csuitable food\u201d and wasn\u2019t allowed to say goodbye to his wife or his four-year-old daughter, whom he fathered while in prison. Amnesty provides no evidence for its claims outside of Daqqah\u2019s lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty previously had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/08\/israel-opt-israeli-authorities-should-release-walid-daqqah-immediately\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaigned<\/a> for Daqqah\u2019s release on the grounds that he only had one or two years to live due to his cancer diagnosis. Levi Meir Clancy, founder of the Jewish organization Foundation of Ours, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.timesofisrael.com\/behind-amnestys-walid-daqqah-advocacy-i-found-stomach-churning-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> on The Times of Israel\u2019s blog that Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-report-details-sexual-abuse-of-female-inmates-by-prison-workers\/\" title=\"Senate Report Details Sexual Abuse Of Female Inmates By Prison Workers\">compassionate release program<\/a> is typically reserved for those with weeks or months to live.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty in that press release, published in August 2023, at least condemned the killing of Moshe Tamam, but only on the grounds that it violated the \u201cGeneva Conventions\u2019 absolute prohibition on violence to the life and person of armed forces members who have laid down their arms, including those in captivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as Clancy wrote, Tamam was not a soldier who surrendered during battle, but was, at the time of his kidnapping, simply on vacation and traveling after visiting his girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>Daqqah only became a writer and novelist after he was in prison, prompting Amnesty to describe him as \u201ca mentor and educator for generations of young Palestinian prisoners, including children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis writings, which included letters, essays, a celebrated play and a novel for young adults, were an act of resistance against the dehumanization of Palestinian prisoners. \u2018Love is my modest and only victory against my jailer,\u2019 he once wrote,\u201d Amnesty said. \u201cWalid Daqqah\u2019s writings behind bars are a testament to a spirit never broken by decades of incarceration and oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jerusalem Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-795884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quoted<\/a> Tamam\u2019s niece, who, along with other members of Tamam\u2019s family, consistently opposed Daqqah\u2019s parole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy uncle\u2019s murderer chose his life after inflicting severe torture, and after the murder, he continued to torment my family, engage in terrorism, and torment the entire nation of Israel. We fought hard to prevent his early release, and the fruits of our struggle have ripened,\u201d Dr. Ortal Tamam said in an interview. \u201cMy uncle\u2019s murderer died while still in prison, sick and poor. Just like the subhuman he is.
