He awaits an insurance claim to go through before renovating the\u2063 house.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The owner of a $1.1 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York City<\/a> home purportedly set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ablaze<\/a> by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>squatter<\/a> declared squatters keep returning to the residence and \u201chave more rights\u201d than he does.<\/p>\n<p>Squatters have caused Zafar Iqbal, 53, to pay a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>$6,000-per-month mortgage<\/a> for a Brooklyn home he purchased in 2017 that he is now too afraid to visit, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/08\/us-news\/nyc-owner-of-1-1m-house-torched-by-squatters-says-they-keep-coming-back-and-have-more-rights-than-landlords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to a Monday report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery two or three weeks, I go there, but I don\u2019t approach,\u201d Iqbal said. \u201cI don\u2019t know if these guys have weapons or whatever. My safety is precious, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more than three months, the landlord has waited for an insurance claim to process that would allow him to renovate the Dyker Heights home, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a couple of contractors. Somebody got in there and torched my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when I found out it was a squatter living there. The squatters have more rights than the homeowners. I\u2019m the owner of the house. How much more can I do? I need help,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Squatters in New York City have become an epidemic following the skyrocketing in homelessness following COVID-19 and the migrant crisis under President Joe Biden, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>In Iqbal\u2019s neighborhood, they have robbed neighbors, committed property damage, and set fires.<\/p>\n<p>The squatter in Iqbal\u2019s home, Cheng Chen, 46,\u00a0was sentenced to six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to arson and criminal mischief, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>Chen lived in Iqbal\u2019s house before the landlord had the squatter arrested after he started the fire after lighting candles and cigarettes, Iqbal said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing is, they keep coming back,\u201d he said of the squatters. \u201cWhat are they going to do, cook food over there? There is no heat, no hot water. There is nothing working over there. It\u2019s not right. It\u2019s stressful for everybody,\u201d he said. \u201cMy wife is upset. Her health is not that good, and this is just compounding it more. This is not good for my neighbors. I treat my neighbors as a family.
