The \u2062&#8221;Sports and Spaces Act&#8221; required 33 votes but was blocked after a 31-15\u2063 vote. The \u200cbill \u2063defined gender based on chromosomes and anatomy. Supporters argued \u2064for fair competition,\u200d while opponents criticized it as discriminatory.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A bill in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/nebraska\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nebraska<\/a> that would have kept males out of women\u2019s restrooms and off of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/retired-nfl-player-calls-for-separate-transgender-category-of-sports-after-biden-executive-order\/\" title=\"Retired NFL Player Calls For Separate Transgender Category Of Sports After Biden Executive Order\">girls\u2019 sports teams<\/a> at schools failed after two Republicans abstained from voting on the measure after they initially indicated support for the legislation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskalegislature.gov\/bills\/view_votes.php?KeyID=10782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, known as the \u201cSports and Spaces Act,\u201d failed on Friday after it did not get enough votes to advance it past cloture for a vote on the actual legislation. It <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/transgender-bathrooms-sports-nebraska-01b7eeeb56874e2338e58d368765f66a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">needed<\/a> to get 33 votes in Nebraska\u2019s unicameral legislature, but was blocked from moving forward after a 31-15 vote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Republicans, state Sens. Tom Brandt and Merv Riepe, both abstained from the cloture vote even though they had initially signed on as sponsors to the legislation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The measure, introduced by state Sen. Kathleen Kauth, would have defined male as someone with XY chromosomes and male anatomy and a female as someone with XX chromosomes and female anatomy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA school should designate each group bathroom and locker room within such school building as either for use by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-times-transgender-athletes-dominated-womens-sports\/\" title=\"5 Times Transgender Athletes Dominated Women\u2019s Sports\">biological females<\/a> or for use by biological males,\u201d the bill <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskalegislature.gov\/FloorDocs\/108\/PDF\/Intro\/LB575.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cAn athletic team or sport designated for females, women, or girls shall not be open to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-reporter-claims-impossible-to-know-babys-gender-at-birth\/\" title=\"CNN reporter claims impossible to know baby\u2019s gender at birth\">biological male student<\/a>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kauth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/transgender-bathrooms-sports-nebraska-01b7eeeb56874e2338e58d368765f66a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  the legislation was necessary because of the \u201csignificant sports performance gap between the sexes\u201d and that males being allowed to compete on women\u2019s sports teams presented \u201ca significant barrier for female athletes to compete in sports.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Democrats claimed the legislation was bigoted and meant to bully students. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is not about protecting women,\u201d Sen. Megan Hunt said. \u201cIt\u2019s about the danger and the power of the imagination of a bigot, Sen. Kauth, and those who would support a bill like this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Nebraska Freedom Coalition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NebraskaFreedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ripped<\/a> into Brandt and Riepe over their votes on the legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTwo Republican state senators have failed to protect women in sports and spaces by stopping LB 575 from becoming law,\u201d the group posted on Facebook. \u201cLet\u2019s hold them accountable for undermining the rights and opportunities and safety of women athletes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Riepe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/unacceptable-two-red-states-each-fail-to-pass-pro-life-protections-by-one-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously blocked<\/a> Nebraska from advancing pro-life protections for unborn babies at six weeks after claiming that Republicans \u201cmust embrace the future of reproductive rights.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trump won Nebraska with nearly 59% of the vote in 2020 and there has not been a Democratic governor in the state since the 1990s. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Governor Jim Pillen<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowt.com\/2024\/04\/05\/nebraska-lawmakers-debate-bill-transgender-student-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> had<\/a> supported LB 575, saying that it reflected \u201ccommon sense Nebraska values.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s nobody that wants their daughter to be in a locker room with a boy and there\u2019s nobody that wants their son to be in a locker room with girls.
