The bills SB 718 and\u200c SB 66 introduce \u2064a second-degree felony for adults who negligently expose first responders to fentanyl, leading \u200cto overdose or serious harm. Ron DeSantis signed Senate bills <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/00718\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>718<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>66<\/strong><\/a>. The first creates a second-degree felony for any adult individual who recklessly exposes first responders to fentanyl that results in an overdose or serious bodily harm.<\/p>\n<p>SB 718 also expands protections for individuals against prosecution if they seek help for themselves or someone else if they believe an overdose is happening. SB 66 designates June 6th as Revive Awareness Day, while directing the Florida Department of Health to raise awareness of the dangers of exposure to opioids.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis said during a news conference in Sanford on Monday that there is a huge amount of fentanyl pouring over the southern border from Mexico. He also added that this has had a huge impact on communities throughout the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/northern-border-state-with-a-southern-border-problem-montana-reeling-as-fentanyl-seizures-skyrocket\/\" title=\"\u2018Northern Border State With A Southern Border Problem\u2019: Montana Reeling As Fentanyl Seizures Skyrocket\">southern border problem<\/a>, this fentanyl ends up in communities from coast to coast,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cWe have been setting records as a country for the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jd-vance-blames-the-childless-left-for-the-decline-of-the-american-family\/\" title=\"JD Vance Blames The \u2018Childless Left\u2019 For The Decline Of The American Family\">opioid overdose deaths<\/a>, driven by fentanyl coming across the southern border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis noted that the state of Florida has done what it could to help with the southern border, including sending state troopers, other law enforcement and the State Guard to Texas to help stem the flow of undocumented migrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re happy to do that because I think it\u2019s an American problem, not just a Texas problem, and the Federal government is really just not doing the job that it needs to do and has really helped facilitate the mess that we\u2019re in,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis stated that fentanyl is often laced into other recreational drugs, which is causing more people to overdose, essentially poisoning them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe someone buys the pill thinking it is something else, it\u2019s laced with fentanyl, then all of a sudden that one pill could be enough to kill somebody,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis also noted that the Biden administration is responsible for this crisis and that the new legislation will help curb some of that by keeping first responders safer in their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the Biden administration\u2019s unwillingness to secure the southern border, law enforcement officers are encountering fentanyl at alarming rates. I\u2019m signing legislation today to keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hawley-introduces-legislative-agenda-to-hire-100000-new-police-officers\/\" title=\"Hawley Introduces Legislative Agenda To Hire 100,000 New Police Officers\">officers safe<\/a> on the job, and to further combat the opioid epidemic.\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis also expanded the state\u2019s Coordinated Opioid Response network from 12 counties to 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpioid addiction has been a scourge in the lives of too many Floridians and too many Americans around the country,\u201d said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo. \u201cThanks to Governor DeSantis and the support of our legislators, we are continuing to take steps to address this human tragedy.
