The course in question, initially focusing on environmental \u200bcitizenship, \u2062evolved into \u200da \u2062study on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/france-isnt-meeting-its-own-paris-climate-accord-commitments\/\" title=\"France Isn\u2019t Meeting Its Own Paris Climate Accord Commitments\">climate justice<\/a> and Marxism,\u200d drawing\u2064 scrutiny. Industry representatives have expressed concerns \u200cabout Ohio State University&#8217;s intention to introduce &#8220;How \u200cto Blow Up a \u200dPipeline&#8221; into its curriculum. They have questioned the\u200d appropriateness of\u2062 using public funds to endorse content that advocates violence against the fossil fuel industry. Originally centered on \u2064environmental citizenship, the\u2063 course has shifted towards exploring\u2062 climate justice and\u2063 Marxism, inviting criticism and scrutiny.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>COLUMBUS, Ohio \u2014<\/strong> Late last month, Amy Andryszak, the president and CEO of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, sent a letter to Gov. Michael DeWine (R-OH) in response to seeing The Ohio State University initially had plans to add <em>How to Blow Up a Pipeline<\/em> to its curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>The book, written by Swedish professor of human ecology and climate change activist Andreas Malm in 2021, advocates the climate social justice movement to ramp up its tactics \u201cin the face of ecological collapse.\u201d Part of its argument includes advocating the destruction of equipment and tools used in the production of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/22\/books\/review\/scorched-earth-emmanuel-kreike-how-to-prepare-for-climate-change-david-pogue-how-to-blow-up-a-pipeline-andreas-malm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>New York Times<\/em> review of the book<\/a> details Malm\u2019s argument that because the ruling class response to climate change has been inadequate, the \u201cproportionate and rational response should be to target fossil fuel infrastructure: Destroy fences around a power plant; occupy pipeline routes, as protesters did for the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines.\u201d And do the same at coal mines.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/01\/14\/magazine\/andreas-malm-interview.html\">Jan. 14 story<\/a> titled \u201cHow This Climate Activist Justifies Political Violence,\u201d Malm told the <em>New York Times <\/em>that he wanted sabotage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/josh-hawley-to-biden-open-it-up-turn-on-domestic-energy-production\/\" title=\"Josh Hawley to Biden: 'Open It Up!' Turn on Domestic Energy Production\">fossil fuel operations<\/a> to be on a much bigger scale than it is now.<\/p>\n<p>His book, which does not give actual instructions for destroying a pipeline, does ask why the climate justice movement stayed so peaceful. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/01\/14\/magazine\/andreas-malm-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">When questioned by the reporter how confident he is <\/a> that when you open the door to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mccabe-says-trumps-message-demanding-peace-and-denouncing-violence-is-actually-coded-language-and-a-dog-whistle-to-his-base-to-fight-video\/\" title=\"McCabe Says Trump\u2019s Message Demanding Peace and Denouncing Violence is Actually \u201cCoded Language\u201d and a \u201cDog Whistle\u201d to His Base to Fight (VIDEO)\">political violence<\/a>, it stays at the level of property and not people, this is how the conversation went:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reporter: <\/strong>It\u2019s hard to think that deaths don\u2019t become inevitable if there is more sabotage.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Malm:<\/strong> Sure, if you have a thousand pipeline explosions per year, if it takes on that extreme scale. But we are some distance from that, unfortunately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reporter: <\/strong>Don\u2019t say \u201cunfortunately.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Malm:<\/strong> Well, I want sabotage to happen on a much larger scale than it does now. I can\u2019t guarantee that it won\u2019t come with accidents. But what do I know? I haven\u2019t personally blown up a pipeline, and I can\u2019t foretell the future.<\/p>\n<p>Andryszak cast doubt in her letter to DeWine on the wisdom of Ohio taxpayers financing a curriculum that includes a book that unabashedly advocated violence of an industry where thousands of Ohioans are employed in one of the country\u2019s top natural gas producers.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe teaching of this book anywhere, but especially in a publicly funded state university, is very concerning, should be investigated by the State and, in our opinion, prohibited,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cThe activities advocated in the book can result in death, danger, and serious injury to those perpetrating the acts and innocent bystanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The class Geography 3597.03 <a href=\"https:\/\/ascnet.osu.edu\/storage\/request_documents\/5748\/GEOG%203597.03%20Course%20Change.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the university was initially established in 2008<\/a> as a \u201cteam-taught, cross-disciplinary course in English and Geography about \u2018Environmental citizenship\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Geography 3597.03 had not been team-taught in a decade, and, over time, the course content and focus evolved considerably.<\/p>\n<p>What was initially a course about students\u2019 understanding of their environments and involvement as citizens in environmental affairs became a course on the political economy of climate change and the political philosophy of \u201cclimate justice.\u201d Indeed, \u201cclimate justice\u201d has been the de facto but unofficial title of the course for the past four years. That change from Geography to Climate became official when the course was offered last fall.<\/p>\n<p>Joel Wainwright, professor in the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University, who designed and is scheduled to teach the class, said in an interview conducted by the university\u2019s Global Arts + Humanities program manager he <a href=\"https:\/\/globalartsandhumanities.osu.edu\/news\/interview-joel-wainwright\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cwas a Marxist who shares a similar background with Geoff Mann, professor of geography at Simon Fraser University, with whom he co-authored Climate Leviathan\u201d<\/a> a book they published in 2018.<\/p>\n<p> Wainwright <a href=\"https:\/\/ascnet.osu.edu\/storage\/request_documents\/5748\/GEOG%203597.03%20Course%20Change.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote in the course description that<\/a> \u201cwhile this course starts\u2014as it must\u2014with a sober, scientific assessment of the current crisis of the Earth and humanity, marked by economic insecurity, a lack of faith in political parties, species loss, and climate change, ultimately, this course aims at cultivating the imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wainwright <a href=\"https:\/\/ascnet.osu.edu\/storage\/request_documents\/5748\/GEOG%203597.03%20Course%20Change.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said one of the educational goals of the class was for<\/a> \u201csuccessful students to integrate approaches to the theme by making connections to out-of-classroom experiences with academic knowledge or across disciplines and\/or to work they have done in previous classes and that they anticipate doing in future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The course was approved by university in October <a href=\"https:\/\/ascnet.osu.edu\/storage\/request_documents\/5748\/GEOG%203597.03%20Course%20Change.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and is seemingly still listed for the fall. <\/a> Yet Chris Booker, the university director of Media and PR, told me that \u201cThe course in question has not been offered since autumn 2022 and is not listed for summer or autumn 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/news-policy-and-issues\/news\/2023\/05\/16\/api-pwc-oh-2023#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20findings%2C%20in,natural%20gas%20and%20oil%20industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2021 for the American Petroleum Institute<\/a> showed the natural gas industry supported over \u00a0351,000 jobs in Ohio, 71,160 direct and 280,370 indirect.<\/p>\n<p>That number represents 5.0 percent of Ohio\u2019s total employment. That study also showed the natural gas industry contributed over $55 billion toward the state\u2019s economy in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Which means anywhere from a handful to hundreds of people are working at some sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shell-admits-to-buying-discounted-russian-oil-despite-embargo\/\" title=\"Shell Admits To Buying Discounted Russian Oil Despite Embargo\">natural gas facility<\/a> at any given time in the state, raising the prospect of accidental violence happening to a geologist, farmer, technician, welder, engineer, chemist, or welder working in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Such an accidental injury or fatality was what Malm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/01\/14\/magazine\/andreas-malm-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shrugged off in his <em>New York Times<\/em> interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the thing we need to keep in mind is that existing pipelines, new pipelines, new infrastructure for extracting fossil fuels are not potentially, possibly \u2014 they are killing people as we speak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Andryszak said while the INGAA deeply respects the First Amendment right to exercise free speech, \u201cWe have a strong opposition to the use of taxpayer funds to support terrorism through the destruction of\u00a0 critical infrastructure,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cThe teaching of this book anywhere, but especially in a publicly funded state \u00a0university is very concerning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andryszak said the tactics advocated in the book could result in either serious injury to workers in the industry or innocent bystanders.<\/p>\n<p>The INGAA confirmed one month after sending the letter they have not received a response from the governor\u2019s office.  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Columbus, Ohio, Amy Andryszak, President of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, wrote to Gov.
