And I\u2019ll support commonsense bipartisan steps to take one Beijing\u2019s favorite tools of coercion and espionage off the table,\u201d McConnell said, speaking on the Senate floor on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2918167\/house-votes-to-force-sale-of-tiktok-by-chinese-owner\/\">voted <\/a>352-65 last month to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act\">Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act<\/a>. The bill, introduced by Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), would make it unlawful for app stores or web hosting services to provide services to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gallagher-says-bipartisan-tiktok-bill-is-not-a-ban\/\" title=\"Gallagher clarifies bipartisan TikTok bill isn't a ban\">social media applications owned<\/a> and operated by the Chinese company ByteDance. <\/p>\n<p>If TikTok wants to continue operating within the U.S. after the act\u2019s passage, it would have to separate itself entirely from ByteDance within six months after it\u2019s passage. While TikTok is presenting the legislation as a \u201ccomplete ban\u201d of the app, the bill\u2019s author and supporters have emphasized that it is not a ban but merely an attempt to separate the app from Chinese influence.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell\u2019s comments come as momentum to pass the House bill appears to have stalled. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\">Senators<\/a> on both sides of the aisle have signaled they\u2019re conflicted about the legislation amid concerns about constitutional rights to free expression, and backlash from young voters in a critical election year. <\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has not yet committed to holding a vote on the bill but has previously said legislation on TikTok is a priority to get accomplished ahead of the November election. <\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has said he would sign the bipartisan deal, even though his presidential campaign is currently active on the platform. Former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2916217\/house-republicans-break-trump-tiktok-bill-hes-wrong\/\">expressed opposition<\/a> to the TikTok measure for supposedly empowering Facebook. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has endorsed the House bill, along with his counterpart, Sen.
