Special Counsel Hur&#8217;s choice not to prosecute Biden for keeping\u2063 classified records from his time as VP under Obama angered House Republicans.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The U.S.<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> Justice <\/span><span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Department <\/span>on Monday rebuffed demands by Republicans in the House of Representatives to hand over audio recordings of President Joe Biden&#8217;s interviews with a special counsel whose report questioning Biden&#8217;s memory set off a political firestorm.<\/p>\n<p>Special Counsel Robert Hur angered House Republicans by deciding not to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-atf-nominee-promises-to-give-hunter-biden-gun-background-check-form-to-senate-probe-any-crimes\/\" title=\"Biden ATF Nominee Promises To Give Hunter Biden Gun Background Check Form To Senate, Probe Any Crimes\">pursue criminal charges<\/a> against Biden for retaining classified records dating back to his time serving as vice president under Barack Obama. The<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> department <\/span>had charged Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/betting-site-posts-odds-for-location-of-next-classified-biden-docs-discovery\/\" title=\"Betting Site Posts Odds for Location of Next Classified Biden Docs Discovery\">keeping classified documents<\/a> after he left the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte said the<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> department <\/span>had already provided all of the information sought in a congressional subpoena, including certain transcribed interviews from Hur&#8217;s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Committees have responded with escalation and threats of criminal contempt,&#8221; Uriarte wrote in a letter to House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan and House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer. &#8220;We urge the Committees to avoid conflict rather than seek it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans have threatened to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt if the<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> department <\/span>does not hand over all of the records they are seeking.<\/p>\n<p>Hur announced in February that he was declining to charge Biden for knowingly taking classified documents after leaving the vice presidency in 2017, sparking a political firestorm by <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/biden-too-old-to-be-convicted-over-mishandling-of-classified-docs-special-counsel-says\/\">noting<\/a> in a report that the president had cooperated with the probe and that his status as a &#8220;well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory&#8221; would make him difficult to convict.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesmen for both Jordan and Comer could not be immediately reached for comment.\t<\/p>\n<p>In the<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"> department<\/span>&#8216;s letter, Uriarte argued that lawmakers have already received &#8220;an extraordinary amount of information&#8221; related to the Hur probe.<\/p>\n<p>This not only included Hur&#8217;s report and his testimony, but copies of certain classified records, transcripts of the interviews with Biden, and a copy of the transcript of Hur&#8217;s interview with Biden&#8217;s memoir ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, the U.S. Justice Department rejected House Republicans&#8217; request for President Joe Biden&#8217;s interview recordings with a special counsel.
