Despite responding to subpoenas, the DOJ is \u2063concerned about possible criminal contempt threats \u200dfrom the \u200dcommittees. This withholding has sparked accusations \u2064of a &#8220;two<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-reps-denied-entry-to-dc-jail-holding-jan-6-defendants\/\" title=\"Republicans Reps Denied Entry To DC Jail Holding Jan. 6 Defendants\">-tiered justice system<\/a>&#8220;\u2064 in the ongoing investigation.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/justice-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Justice Department<\/a> is refusing to provide the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-judiciary-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"House Judiciary\">House Judiciary<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-oversight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Oversight<\/a> committees with the audio file of then-special counsel <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/robert-k-hur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Robert Hur<\/a>\u2018s interview with President <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a> over his handling of classified documents, claiming the committees\u2019 request to receive the file is not in the spirit of \u201clegitimate oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jim-jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jim Jordan<\/a> (R-OH) and Oversight Committee Chairman <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/james-comer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>James Comer<\/a> (R-KY) obtained by the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte said the department has now responded to each of the four subpoenas sent by the committees. However, Uriarte wrote, the DOJ is concerned with the \u201cthreats of criminal contempt\u201d from the committees despite providing what they believe are the necessary records regarding Hur\u2019s investigation, which yielded no recommendation for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cbp-ice-release-reports-on-border-arrests-seizures\/\" title=\"CBP, ICE release reports on border arrests, seizures\">criminal charges<\/a> against the president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committees\u2019 reaction is difficult to explain in terms of any lack of information or frustration of any informational or investigative imperative, given the Department\u2019s actual conduct,\u201d Uriarte wrote. \u201cWe are therefore concerned that the Committees are disappointed not because you didn\u2019t receive information, but because you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uriarte\u2019s letter comes as House Republicans continue their impeachment inquiry into Biden as part of a larger investigation into the president and his family. House GOP members have stood firm on their accusations of a \u201ctwo-tiered justice system\u201d as well after former President Donald Trump received criminal charges for his handling of classified documents and Biden did not.<\/p>\n<p>Comer and Jordan subpoenaed the Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland in February and <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2024-03-25%20JDJ%20JC%20to%20DOJ%20re%20Hur%20subpoena%20and%20contempt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>sent a letter<\/a> on March 25 demanding that the agency turn over unredacted transcripts and audio recordings from Hur\u2019s interview with the president \u2014 or otherwise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2937347\/republicans-threaten-garland-contempt-biden-classified-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizonas-maricopa-county-board-of-supervisors-rejects-arizona-senate-subpoena-demands-now-face-contempt-charges\/\" title=\"Arizona\u2019s Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Rejects Arizona Senate Subpoena Demands \u2013 Now Face Contempt Charges\">face contempt<\/a> of Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Audio recordings of the interview could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-art-dealer-served-jail-time-and-allegedly-defrauded-investor\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden Art Dealer Served Jail Time and Allegedly Defrauded Investor\">shed additional light<\/a> on Biden\u2019s mental acuity, a flashpoint for House Republicans, by revealing the pace at which he spoke, filler words, or other items that cannot be captured through a written transcript.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Justice Department has pushed back against these requests, arguing it has already provided all of the information the committees need to exercise oversight under the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt every step of the way, the Department has worked diligently to meet the Committees\u2019 needs and to fulfill the Attorney General\u2019s commitment to transparency,\u201d Uriarte wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department is concerned that the Committees\u2019 particular focus on continuing to demand information that is cumulative of information we already gave you \u2014 what the President and Mr. Hur\u2019s team said in the interview \u2014 indicates that the Committees\u2019 interests may not be in receiving information in service of legitimate oversight or investigatory functions, but to serve political purposes that should have no role in the treatment of law enforcement files,\u201d the assistant attorney general continued. <\/p>\n<p>Uriarte said that even if the committees had a \u201cremaining investigative purpose\u201d for requesting the audio files, they have not identified one. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears to the Department that any information in these files that is relevant to the Committees\u2019 stated purposes is cumulative of the information already produced, including in the transcript,\u201d Uriarte wrote, adding that it is \u201cparticularly important\u201d for the committees to \u201carticulate any remaining needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Department is willing to hear more from the Committees, but at this time your further requests appear attenuated from the Committees\u2019 stated purposes \u2014 with today\u2019s production, you now have the information you requested,\u201d Uriarte added.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reached out to Comer and Jordan, as well as committee ranking members Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Jerry Nadler (D-NY), for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Justice denies the House Judiciary and Oversight committees access to the audio recording of former special counsel Robert Hur&#8217;s interview with President Joe Biden regarding classified documents.
