Brent \u200bTaylor, the\u200c bill&#8217;s sponsor, suggests leaving reparations discussions to the federal level, citing \u2064complexity\u2062 in addressing slavery&#8217;s legacy and obligations to\u200b descendant.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tennessee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Tennessee<\/a> bill in the state <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Senate<\/a> forbidding the allocation of funds to study the effects of <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/reparations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reparation<\/a> payments\u00a0to descendants of slaves has created friction between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/reports-president-trump-is-traveling-to-gettysburg-to-meet-with-gop-lawmakers\/\" title=\"Reports: President Trump Is Traveling to Gettysburg to Meet with GOP Lawmakers\">state lawmakers<\/a> and community leaders. <\/p>\n<p>The bill, which will be voted on in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Senate<\/a> on Wednesday, is pitting lawmakers concerned about the role of state and local government against their constituents who want to see elected leaders take action. <\/p>\n<p>The Rev. Earle Fisher, the senior pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church, has launched a petition against the legislation and has gathered 500 signatures in the past two days. Fisher blasted the idea the bill has anything to do with fiscal responsibility or government overreach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about money,\u201d Fisher told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/politics\/tennessee-bill-to-ban-slavery-reparations-draws-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>NewsNation<\/a><em>. \u201c<\/em>This is about ideology. This is about political power. This is about people who are hellbent on maintaining racial and economic inequities across the state, and they are scared to death that the truth would come out. So, they don\u2019t want anybody to study it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. Brent Taylor, a Republican who sponsored the bills, argues the talk of reparations\u00a0should be left to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-demand-pelosi-pay-fine-after-speaker-defies-new-rule-bypasses-house-metal-detectors\/\" title=\"Republicans Demand Pelosi Pay Fine After Speaker Defies New Rule, Bypasses House Metal Detectors\">federal lawmakers<\/a>. Questions about how to address something as complex as the history of slavery and what the country owes to descendants of slaves is something that \u201cbelongs to the federal government and does not belong to our cities and counties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will make very clear our vote today does not pass judgment on reparations,\u201d Taylor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13282959\/Tennessee-slavery-reparations-pastor-Senate-racial-economic-inequities-bill-cash-restitution.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> recently. \u201cThat is a very significant and very important issue for many people in our country.\u201d However, he also said he thinks it\u2019s \u201cinappropriate for our cities and counties tax dollars to go to such an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  Fisher said the bill is just a move by Republicans to maintain the status quo. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not about money,\u201d Fisher said. \u201cThis is about ideology. This is about political power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The source of controversy comes from the addition of Amendment 1, which rewrites a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/liberal-democrats-support-trumps-plan-to-increase-payments-to-2000\/\" title=\"Liberal Democrats Support Trump\u2019s Plan To Increase Payments To ,000\">bill passed<\/a> in the Senate a year ago. The amendment bans a \u201ccounty, municipality, or metropolitan government from expending funds for the purposes of studying or disbursing reparations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fisher said that because the state had a budget surplus, lawmakers should explore how they help those most marginalized.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the state of Tennessee has hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars in a surplus, surplus means we are taking care of all of our financial responsibilities, and this is how much money we have left over.
