Professor Bruce Fleming&#8217;s book\u200b exposes the DEI impact at the\u2063 U.S. Naval Academy, revealing the challenges\u200d of racial preferences and \u2063the\u2063 stifling of individuality among midshipmen. From <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/15\/navy-puts-the-kibosh-on-digital-recruiting-program-after-discovering-enlistees-arent-into-drag-queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employing<\/a> enlisted drag queens to boost recruitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/15\/from-virginia-to-texas-air-force-throws-pride-parties-while-our-readiness-crumbles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using<\/a> taxpayer funds to host LGBT \u201cpride\u201d events on military installations, America\u2019s supreme fighting force has prioritized promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/dei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)<\/a> racism over addressing the biggest challenges hampering U.S. military readiness. <\/p>\n<p>A recently released book unveils how this leftist ideology is also infecting the military\u2019s service academies. In <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Saving-Our-Service-Academies-Thinking\/dp\/B0C7P9X97L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saving Our Service Academies: My Battle with, and for, the US Naval Academy to Make Thinking Officers<\/a><\/em>, author and professor Bruce Fleming documents the pervasiveness of DEI throughout the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) and shows how the institution\u2019s cookie-cutter bureaucracy is crippling individuality among the school\u2019s midshipmen. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1957645701\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e0d75367d4c95bcb5dad6d0e51ba0a80 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e0d75367d4c95bcb5dad6d0e51ba0a80\"><\/div>\n<p>During his over 30-year teaching career at the institution, Fleming served (for a time) on the USNA Admissions Board, which evaluates applicants and decides which are ultimately admitted into the school. While on the board, he allegedly discovered that \u2014 like many civilian colleges \u2014 the academy considers applicants\u2019 race throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/student-group-pledges-to-re-up-yale-lawsuit-tossed-by-biden-doj\/\" title=\"Student Group Pledges to Re-Up Yale Lawsuit Tossed by Biden DOJ\">admissions process<\/a> and accepts nonwhite applicants who don\u2019t meet the school\u2019s academic requirements. Fleming claims that \u201c[a]pplicants who self-identified as a member of a race the Academy wished to privilege \u2026 were briefed separately to the committee not by a white member but by a minority Navy lieutenant.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe choices are simple. If you want students who look a certain way but tend to score lower than others, you accept the lower scores and stop talking about your standards. Or you go with the class that can meet these standards and stop talking about the way they look,\u201d Fleming writes. \u201cThe Naval Academy tries to square the circle by both bragging about its standards and letting in half the class to lower standards.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/29\/scotus-rules-race-based-college-admissions-violate-the-14th-amendment-ending-affirmative-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6-3 decision<\/a> that the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-justice-department-drops-discrimination-lawsuit-against-yale\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Justice Department Drops Discrimination Lawsuit Against Yale\">race-based admissions<\/a>, or \u201caffirmative action,\u201d by institutions of higher education is unconstitutional. That decision <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/06\/no-the-supreme-court-did-not-carve-out-a-military-exception-in-race-based-admissions\/\">did not<\/a>, however, address the use of such policies by U.S. military academies. Students for Fair Admissions \u2014 the plaintiff in the aforementioned SCOTUS decision \u2014 filed lawsuits against <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforfairadmissions.org\/students-for-fair-admissions-files-lawsuit-challenging-racial-and-ethnic-admissions-policies-at-west-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West Point<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/06\/lawsuit-u-s-naval-academys-consideration-of-race-in-its-admissions-process-is-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naval Academy<\/a> over their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/as-supreme-court-hears-challenge-against-race-based-college-admissions-joe-biden-wants-race-based-supreme-court-nominee\/\" title=\"As Supreme Court Hears Challenge Against Race-Based College Admissions, Joe Biden Wants Race-Based Supreme Court Nominee\">race-based admissions policies<\/a> in September and October, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout his book, Fleming further notes that the USNA\u2019s obsession with race is creating \u201cresentment within the ranks,\u201d and that students who speak out against the school\u2019s DEI-focused promotion system are punished. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d735563a7b7ca9a8c01704a202e7816c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d735563a7b7ca9a8c01704a202e7816c\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat I saw at Annapolis was that nonracist white midshipmen became resentful at realizing that leadership positions were awarded to less competent midshipmen on the basis of skin color, and that they themselves, if they noted this out loud, were punished for not being with the program \u2014 which increased their resentment,\u201d Fleming writes. \u201cAll promotions or preferences are individual ones, and \u2018broadly reflective diversity\u2019 is bought at the individual level by preferring a less competent individual with the desired skin color. If they are equally competent or more competent, the problem disappears.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe military shows all the problems of any top-down totalitarian state, and its members can be court-martialed for resisting,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout his career at the academy, Fleming regularly questioned the decision-making from the school\u2019s leadership and penned several op-eds criticizing what he viewed to be its shortcomings. In 2017, for example, he wrote an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/10\/16\/not-just-west-point-u-s-military-academies-become-disneyland-politicians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> in The Federalist detailing how \u201cupper-class students at service academies have lost faith in the system, because it\u2019s based on lies.\u201d Fleming said that \u201cstudents realize they are cast members in a military Disneyland run for the benefit of the brass and the tourists, not the taxpayers who pay their way and want better-than-average officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleming\u2019s public criticisms generated ire from the academy\u2019s bureaucratic leadership. In 2018, the school fired him over allegations of classroom impropriety filed by five students. Fleming profusely denied the accusations and appealed the decision to the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/19\/controversial-naval-academy-professor-returns-but-not-to-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered<\/a> his reinstatement to the academy in July 2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c8ff53d060fb406d0bb0805a541791f4 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c8ff53d060fb406d0bb0805a541791f4\"><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/19\/controversial-naval-academy-professor-returns-but-not-to-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Navy Times<\/a>, Judge Mark Syska said in his ruling that the midshipman who \u201cfiled the longest complaint\u201d had \u201ccredibility issues\u201d and that his complaint was \u201cgreatly exaggerated \u2014 to the point of being hard to credit on certain points.\u201d Syska additionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/07\/25\/federal-board-reinstates-naval-academy-professor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highlighted<\/a> that the students who filed the complaints \u201cdid not generally take offense or have any actual issue with the appellant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, much of the charged conduct, as noted by the investigating panel, did not appear to be actual misconduct in the context of free-wheeling classroom discussions,\u201d Syska wrote.<\/p>\n<p>While ultimately reinstated by the academy, Fleming has not been permitted to return to the classroom. The school has placed him on a \u201cforced sabbatical,\u201d according to the \u201cEyes on Annapolis\u201d podcast, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyeonannapolis.net\/2024\/02\/bonus-podcast-behind-the-walls-of-the-usna-with-bruce-fleming\/#:~:text=After%20being%20fired%20for%20his,him%20back%20into%20the%20classroom.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interviewed<\/a> Fleming in February. <\/p>\n<p>In concluding his book, Fleming calls on military institutions such as the USNA and West Point to \u201c[d]ial back the hype\u201d and \u201cstop lying about what [they] are.\u201d Specifically, he demands these academies quit pushing mistruths about their selectivity and \u201cquality of the students\u201d to uphold the facade that they\u2019re legacy institutions worthy of praise and adoration.<\/p>\n<p>Our service academies are \u201cbeautiful places and, under these circumstances, duty, honor, and country could once again be primary.
