Greg Abbott visits Israel to reinforce support.\">recently \u2062signed legislation<\/a> to criminalize squatting, aiming to protect homeowners from unauthorized property \u2063occupation. DeSantis highlighted the need for\u200c homeowners in states like California and New York to have legal recourse against squatters. His efforts \u2063aim to safeguard residents, including seasonal and middle-income retirees in Florida.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ron-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ron DeSantis<\/a> (R-FL) stressed the need for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>homeowners<\/a> to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-sen-tester-canceling-keystone-pipeline-was-a-mistake\/\" title=\"Democrat Sen. Tester: Canceling Keystone pipeline was a mistake\">property rights<\/a> against squatters, arguing that his state is taking the lead on addressing this topic.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Florida<\/a> governor recently signed legislation to criminalize squatting, which would make it illegal for squatters to move into private property. DeSantis noted how some homeowners in states, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\" title>California<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a>, will get punished for trying to remove squatters from their home. He said homeowners need to be allowed to stand up against this practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s important for our state to lay down the law because we have a lot of seasonal residents,\u201d DeSantis said on Fox News\u2019s <em>Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo<\/em>. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not just wealthy people. We\u2019ve got a lot of middle-income retirees, they spend most of the year in Florida, but maybe they\u2019ll go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Michigan<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Wisconsin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Wisconsin<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/New-York\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Canada<\/a> for the summer. How could it be possible or acceptable for them to come back from summer and find out that somebody\u2019s moved into their home and that there\u2019s very little they can do about it immediately, and they\u2019ve got to wait seven or eight months to go through a process? That\u2019s unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis also described this new legislation against squatting as \u201cthe foundation of everything we\u2019re trying to do in Florida,\u201d referencing how important individual rights are to a free society. He added that he was glad Florida is the state that is taking the lead on this growing topic.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/2942111\/desantis-ends-squatter-scam-in-florida-new-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>signed into law by DeSantis on Wednesday<\/a>, allows property owners to call the sheriff\u2019s office to remove squatters if the squatters are not able to produce documents showing they are authorized to live there.
