Mariner Finance is under\u200c legal scrutiny by 11 attorneys general, including Michelle Henry from Pennsylvania, for purportedly engaging in unlawful practices. The lawsuit was originally \u2064filed in 2022 and underwent recent revisions in the \u200cU.S. District Court for \u2063the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Mariner attempted to have \u200call accusations dismissed \u200bearlier this year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 Mariner Finance has been sued by 11 attorneys general, including Pennsylvania\u2019s Michelle Henry, amid accusations of unlawful business practices.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was first filed in 2022 and amended earlier this week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Mariner had sought earlier this year to have all claims dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>The term often used in description is predatory lending. In most cases, it involves aggressive tactics and unfair loan terms like high-interest rates and fees. Not all are obvious at time of signing by borrowers.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutors say Mariner, headquartered in Baltimore with 55 locations in seven states, charged customers for \u201chidden add-on products that they either didn\u2019t know about or didn\u2019t agree to buy,\u201d a release says. <a href=\"https:\/\/ncdoj.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/86-Second-Amended-Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The lawsuit says<\/strong><\/a> Mariner employees didn\u2019t mention the add-ons or misrepresented them when talking to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Mariner is accused of illegal sales tactics with new borrowers, including same-day check-in-hand lending. It uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-carolina-joins-predatory-lender-litigation-against-mariner-finance\/\" title=\"North Carolina Joins Lawsuit Against Mariner Finance for Predatory Lending\">unsolicited \u201clive checks\u201d mailings<\/a> to draw in new customers, prosecutors say.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Mariner charged consumers $121.7 million nationwide in premiums and fees for add-on products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis mega lending company preyed on and deceived consumers by hiding fees and costs for products, while illegally soliciting existing borrowers who already were struggling to afford payments to take on even more debt,\u201d Henry said.<\/p>\n<p>Mariner is owned by a Wall Street private equity fund managed by Warburg Pincus.<\/p>\n<p>In prosecutors\u2019 request for relief, Mariner is being asked to stop charging consumers for add-on products, and to cease other harmful practices.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Mariner is asked to make full restitution to borrowers; repay unlawfully gained profits; be assessed civil penalties; rescind or reform all contracts or loan agreements with consumers affected by the company\u2019s unlawful practices.<\/p>\n<p>Henry leads the list of attorneys general that in the first filing included the District of Columbia, New Jersey, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
