Strong opposition from LGBT advocates \u200darguing \u2064discrimination against transgender individuals led to the bill&#8217;s setback in the Republican-led Senate.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nebraska\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nebraska<\/a> lawmakers failed to move forward with a bill that would prohibit<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> transgender<\/a> student-athletes from competing in sports of the opposite sex.<\/p>\n<p>Legislative Bill 575, <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskalegislature.gov\/FloorDocs\/108\/PDF\/SI\/LB575.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the Sports and Spaces Act<\/a>, would also require transgender students to use the bathroom consistent with their biological sex. The bill was met with heavy opposition from LGBT activists, who said it discriminated against transgender people. Two Republican state senators abstained from voting, claiming the bill was incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill is incomplete, and it needs to be reworked,\u201d Republican state Sen. Tom Brandt<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/lgbtq\/4577370-bill-transgender-student-athlete-nebraska\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> told<\/a> the <em>Hill<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy fear is it\u2019ll affect all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-times-transgender-athletes-dominated-womens-sports\/\" title=\"5 Times Transgender Athletes Dominated Women\u2019s Sports\">female athletes<\/a>,\u201d said Republican state Sen. Kathleen Kauth, the bill\u2019s primary sponsor, expressing disappointment in the two state senators who abstained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am disappointed that two of our senators decided to not vote on the bill. It\u2019s a blanket ban on trans kids participating in extracurricular activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kauth was the lawmaker behind last year\u2019s successful effort to restrict transgender surgeries and puberty blockers for minors.
