The agreement enables them to view the eclipse based on their religious beliefs. \u200bThe inmates represent various faiths, including Seventh Day Adventist, Muslim, \u2063Baptist, and practitioners of Santeria.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>The six inmates from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"New York\">New York<\/a> prison will get to watch Monday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"New York\">solar eclipse<\/a> after they filed a lawsuit claiming the prison\u2019s implementation of a lockdown violated their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/religion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"religious\">religious<\/a> liberties. <\/p>\n<p>Last week, the six men being held at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility in New York filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2950109\/new-york-inmates-claim-religious-freedom-lawsuit-watch-solar-eclipse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"lawsuit\">lawsuit<\/a> against the state corrections department after 23 state prisons in the path of totality announced they would be locking down the facilities reportedly due to concerns about security breaches. <\/p>\n<p>The six plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers said they had come to an agreement with the state and would allow the six inmates to view the solar eclipse due to their \u201csincerely held religious beliefs,\u201d the <em>Associated Press<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/solar-eclipse-prison-lawsuit-44533719957e2999232597dcf327fd2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The men claimed they were a Seventh Day Adventist, a Muslim, a Baptist, and an atheist, with two alleging they were practitioners of Santeria. <\/p>\n<p>Each had submitted requests to the facility prior to the event asking for authorization to view the solar eclipse but had received varied responses, prior to the lockdown announcement.   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA solar eclipse is a rare, natural phenomenon with great religious significance to many,\u201d the six plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers wrote in the complaint filed last week.<\/p>\n<p>Corrections Department spokesman Thomas Mailey said they had agreed to allow the six men to watch Monday\u2019s solar eclipse upon the plaintiff\u2019s agreement to drop the lawsuit with prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>The prison announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYSDOCCS\/status\/1773349328699994519\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>lockdown<\/a> at the end of March that would have required inmates to stay in their housing units from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with all visitations canceled after 2 p.m. Though, staff and inmates are to be given safety glasses to watch from their assigned units or work locations.  <\/p>\n<p>The six men were not the only inmates to submit requests to watch the solar eclipse. Mailey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2024\/04\/04\/new-york-prison-eclipse-inmates-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> the <em>Washington Post<\/em> that his department had begun reviewing requests to watch the event prior to last week\u2019s lawsuit. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The solar eclipse\u2019s path of totality is expected to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/solar-eclipse\/what-time-is-the-solar-eclipse-2024-in-new-york-state\/5279115\/#:~:text=The%20roughly%20100%2Dmile%20wide,Forge%2C%20Lake%20Placid%20and%20Plattsburgh.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> enter<\/a> the southwestern part of New York and last between 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>After Monday, the next solar eclipse will not take place until 2044.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six New York prison inmates will view Monday&#8217;s solar eclipse following a lawsuit alleging a lockdown violated their religious rights.
