The University of Maryland-led government-funded database is branding a significant\u2064 pro-life organization, Students \u2062for \u200cLife of America (SFLA), as a &#8220;Terrorist Group.&#8221;\u200c This\u200b classification within the database designed to monitor radicalization has\u200c raised concerns about possible bias against \u200cpeaceful pro-life advocates, leading to legal and public discussions on the\u200c matter.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>A government-funded database, led by the University of Maryland and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.start.umd.edu\/pirus-frequently-asked-questions#q1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ostensibly established<\/a> to track \u201cradicalization,\u201d is targeting a major pro-life group as \u201cterrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students for Life of America (SFLA), which has <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforlife.org\/about\/who-we-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,400<\/a> chapters at campuses across the country, \u201cappears under a \u2018Terrorist Group\u2019 label in the raw dataset,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/former-terrorism-officials-question-radicalization-study-that-lists-peaceful-pro-lifers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to a Monday article in The College Fix. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1766060149\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7b8890ff601a1ce6e3d663281c227dde fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7b8890ff601a1ce6e3d663281c227dde\"><\/div>\n<p>The database, called the \u201cProfiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States\u201d (PIRUS), was funded in part by grants from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s Center for the Study of Terrorism and Behavior (CSTAB). According to the project\u2019s website, PIRUS is a \u201cquantitative dataset of individuals in the United States who radicalized to the point of violent or non-violent ideologically motivated criminal activity, or ideologically motivated association with a foreign or domestic extremist organization from 1948 until 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PIRUS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.start.umd.edu\/profiles-individual-radicalization-united-states-pirus-keshif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">database<\/a> overwhelmingly targets \u201cright-wing\u201d offenders, with more than 1,700 identified compared to fewer than 550 labeled \u201cleft-wing.\u201d Ideological subcategories include tabs for \u201canti-abortion,\u201d \u201cChristian identity,\u201d and \u201canti-LGBT\u201d but not for far-left radical abortion groups such as those <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/14\/corporate-media-law-enforcement-uninterested-in-political-violence-when-it-involves-pregnancy-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">behind<\/a> the attacks on pregnancy centers or threats to Supreme Court justices. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very concerned about government-funded programs engaging in viewpoint discrimination as they attempt to insinuate that there may be future harms from peaceful pro-life people,\u201d Kristi Hamrick, a spokeswoman for SFLA told the Fix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/nationally-funded-database-classifies-students-for-life-as-a-terrorist-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to LifeSiteNews, a pro-life website, \u201cThe PIRUS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.start.umd.edu\/profiles-individual-radicalization-united-states-pirus-keshif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">database<\/a> lists two individuals associated with SFLA who match the description of student members who were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/breaking-pro-lifers-arrested-trying-to-chalk-black-preborn-lives-matter-at-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested<\/a> in 2020 for attempting to chalk \u2018black pre-born lives matter\u2019 on a sidewalk outside of a Planned Parenthood center.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fb7abf8121fe9d2f06b2effb84cf99f5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fb7abf8121fe9d2f06b2effb84cf99f5\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe pro-lifers were arrested despite being told verbally by police that they would not be prevented from painting and having been instructed to use tempura (sic) paint,\u201d LifeSiteNews reported. <\/p>\n<p>A federal court in Washington, D.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2023\/08\/21\/court-rules-in-favor-of-pro-life-protesters-arrested-for-chalk-messages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> in August that the government violated the pro-life demonstrators\u2019 First Amendment rights by engaging in viewpoint discrimination. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Joe Biden\u2019s Department of Justice (DOJ) has escalated federal efforts to crack down on Christians, including Catholics and pro-life activists, by labeling them as domestic extremists. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/23\/5-times-the-biden-admin-persecuted-christians-for-living-their-faith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5 Times The Biden Admin Persecuted Christians For Living Their Faith<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f5e0a0045f9b2b3714d14ccc326bacd3 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f5e0a0045f9b2b3714d14ccc326bacd3\"><\/div>\n<p>According to an October 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/19\/the-fbi-has-indicted-22-pro-life-protesters-and-zero-pregnancy-center-firebombers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">review<\/a> of Justice Department press releases by The Federalist, that year the DOJ announced the indictments of 22 pro-life activists and not a single pro-abortion extremist who firebombed pregnancy centers. Among those arrested was Paul Vaughn, one of a handful of people <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/30\/dad-of-11-convicted-for-praying-at-abortion-facility-alongside-5-other-pro-lifers-targeted-by-doj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convicted<\/a> for the crime of praying at a Tennessee abortion facility.
