Randall Kennedy, \u200cwho \u200bteaches at Harvard Law School, criticized the \u200drequirement in a\u200d scathing article in The\u200c Harvard \u2062Crimson. Kennedy, who is black and teaches courses on race relations, questions the imposition of ideological \u2062commitments on academic hiring processes.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>A Harvard law professor is calling on the country\u2019s most prestigious school to \u201cabandon\u201d forcing academics to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-dei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion<\/a> (DEI) statements.<\/p>\n<p>Randall Kennedy, who <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/faculty\/randall-l-kennedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaches<\/a> criminal law and contracts at Harvard Law School, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/column\/council-on-academic-freedom-at-harvard\/article\/2024\/4\/2\/kennedy-abandon-dei-statements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">penned<\/a> a scathing column Tuesday in The Harvard Crimson, the school\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy, who is black and also teaches courses on the regulation of race relations, skewered the Ive League\u2019s commitment to requiring DEI statements as part of the school\u2019s hiring process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCandidates for academic positions at Harvard should not be asked to support ideological commitments,\u201d Kennedy wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He noted the \u201chowl of protest\u201d that would erupt if Harvard were to ask academic candidates for statements about their positions on capitalism, patriotism, or Making America Great Again \u201cwith a clear expectation of allegiance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy requiring academics to profess \u2014 and flaunt \u2014 faith in DEI, the proliferation of diversity statements poses a profound challenge to academic freedom,\u201d Kennedy wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He criticized the \u201cexpectation that DEI statements will essentially constitute pledges of allegiance that enlist academics into the DEI movement by dint of soft-spoken but real coercion: If you want the job or the promotion, play ball \u2014 or else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DEI statement requirement discourages conservative candidates, Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does not take much discernment to see, moreover, that the diversity statement regime leans heavily and tendentiously towards varieties of academic leftism and implicitly discourages candidates who harbor ideologically conservative dispositions,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy also called out the \u201ccottage industry\u201d of diversity statement counselors that has sprung up in the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy overreaching, by resorting to compulsion, by forcing people to toe a political line, by imposing ideological litmus tests, by incentivizing insincerity, and by creating a circular mode of discourse that is seemingly impervious to self-questioning, the current DEI regime is discrediting itself,\u201d Kennedy wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Academics at Harvard and beyond already feel \u201cintense and growing resentment\u201d toward the DEI movement, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a scholar on the left committed to struggles for social justice. The realities surrounding mandatory DEI statements, however, make me wince,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe practice of demanding them ought to be abandoned, both at Harvard and beyond,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy\u2019s column comes in the wake of a slew of woes for Harvard over the last few months.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/harvards-chief-diversity-officer-plagiarized-work-too-complaint-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backlash<\/a> in recent months for its former president Claudine Gay\u2019s highly criticized congressional testimony on Harvard\u2019s response to anti-Semitism on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The Ivy League school is currently facing a congressional probe on how it handled anti-Semitism on campus, as well as the school\u2019s response to the plagiarism allegations against Gay.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Harvard Law professor urges the prestigious school to halt mandatory DEI statements.
