This improvement \u2062follows \u200cthe mandate of the 2021 Excellent Public\u2063 Schools Act,\u2064 requiring \u2062all K-5 literacy educators to undergo training in the science of reading, \u2064surpassing the national average of \u206313%. \u200dThe Superintendent of \u2064Public Instruction, Catherine Truitt, emphasized the positive impact of implementing\u2063 evidence-based reading practices.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>(The Center Square) \u2013 Midyear elementary school reading assessments in 2023-24 are up 22%, education leaders told the state Board of Education in its Wednesday meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 Excellent Public Schools Act required all K-5 literacy educators to be trained in the science of reading. The national rate is just 13%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElementary educators have been putting the science of reading into practice throughout the past three years, and the results speak for themselves,\u201d Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt said in a statement. \u201cThis growth and continued progress is critical to ensuring our youngest learners are in the position to read, lead and succeed throughout their academic journey. Improving reading proficiency for students in North Carolina has been a priority for me since I stepped into office, and I\u2019m so proud of what our students and educators have accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reading proficiency has been steadily increasing since passage of the Excellent Public Schools Act, according to the Department of Public Instruction. The legislation required literacy educators to take the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling course, a two-year professional development program.<\/p>\n<p>It is often known by its acronym, LETRS.<\/p>\n<p>While scores are increasing across all subgroups of students, \u201cachievement gaps persist among Black, Hispanic and American Indian\/Alaska Native children and their white and Asian peers,\u201d the Department of Instruction said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is much to celebrate, between students\u2019 continued growth and nearing LETRS\u2019 full implementation,\u201d Amy Rhyne, NCDPI\u2019s director of the Office of Early Learning said in a statement, \u201cbut there is still work to be done to support all elementary students in their reading journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The news Wednesday was not as good, however, about teacher attrition rates in North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The rate for the 2022-23 school year was 11%, up from 7.8% in 2021-22, educators told the board in a presentation.<\/p>\n<p>For beginning teachers, the rate was 15.1%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs shared in today\u2019s presentation, North Carolina\u2019s increase in attrition mirrors national trends yet still remains lower than projections for the national average,\u201d the Department of Instruction said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher vacancy rate also increased from 5.9% to 6.4%, the state said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContext from the presentation shows that North Carolina\u2019s vacancy rate is lower than other public sectors, including in North Carolina state government,\u201d the Department of Instruction said in a news release.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a recent state Board of Education meeting, education leaders reported a 22% increase in midyear reading assessments for elementary students in 2023-24.
