Last week on ABC&#8217;s &#8220;The View,&#8221; \u200bSunny Hostin labeled Coleman Hughes, \u2063a black\u2062 CNN contributor, a \u2062&#8221;charlatan&#8221; for\u200d promoting a &#8220;colorblind America&#8221; in his book, &#8220;The End\u200c of Race Politics.&#8221; Hughes received applause for his \u200cstance, \u200cbut Hostin rejected his ideas, sparking \u2062a\u200d debate on race-based policies versus socioeconomics to\u2062 address societal disadvantages.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The female panelists on ABC\u2019s \u201cThe View\u201d berated Coleman Hughes, a black CNN contributor, as a \u201ccharlatan\u201d last week when Hughes joined the program to promote his new book arguing for a \u201ccolorblind America.\u201d Hughes now says the co-host who launched the attack, Sunny Hostin, has remained unapologetic. <\/p>\n<p>Hughes\u2019 book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/End-Race-Politics-Arguments-Colorblind-ebook\/dp\/B0C4J8QL8M\/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hdYXwmHtTtN7Akwn8X0tmQGLykusDQIT4hUIBSxDqjKR-EwVpeCpUiY5xbeMaFheGiL8qBT7eXH3NgGWG_gxEsp7fE7RuJR68gnQpPLDYvExXVyzYCWvkEZ0yh8bw3dqN6EEnVgUJZ0oToV8HfhstnCnwPT41jFq26x4agSoVCCcCLtXU9aa6AGx4IBHBGpq3g7px-a6BRhA2A_I9W2ZpFLXo76r3d6AypOIP-VWloE.rQxwD9yEBXRqL2RnMhr2a0URJUDrc5MHFr8GrTGWIpM&#038;dib_tag=se&#038;keywords=coleman+hughes+book&#038;qid=1712197772&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The End of Race Politics<\/a><\/em>, makes the case against race-based policies as a means to end American racism. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy overall argument is that class, socioeconomics is the better proxy for disadvantage,\u201d Hughes said, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We all want to help the disadvantaged, and the question is, \u2018How do we identify them?\u2019 Right? The default right now in a lot of areas of policy is to use, you know, black and Hispanic identity as a proxy for disadvantage, and my argument is that you actually get a better picture of who needs help by looking at socioeconomics and income that picks out people in a more accurate way.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hughes was met with spontaneous applause from the live audience after he briefly summarized his book. But Hostin then shut him down, interrupting the clapping to claim his argument was \u201cfundamentally flawed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I read your book twice because I wanted to give it a chance,\u201d Hostin said, claiming race-based initiatives were necessary because \u201cyou see the huge disparity between white households and black households.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Coleman Hughes holds his own on The View, calls out Sunny Hostin for her attempts to use ad hominem attacks instead of debating his ideas.<\/p>\n<p>And he explains why being in favor of color blind policies instead of race-based policies is more beneficial. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ixZDy9YOGv\">pic.twitter.com\/ixZDy9YOGv<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Te\ud835\udd4fasLindsay\u2122 (@TexasLindsay_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TexasLindsay_\/status\/1773413795668406496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Hughes responded by invoking Martin Luther King Jr., arguing that focusing on class-based action will \u201cdisproportionately target blacks and Hispanics because they\u2019re disproportionately poor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hostin fired back by touting her relationship with King\u2019s daughter, Bernice, and claimed again that Hughes\u2019 \u201cpremise is fundamentally flawed\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You claim that colorblindness was the goal of the civil rights movement based upon Dr. King\u2019s \u2018I Have A Dream\u2019 speech \u2014 you know, content of character versus the color of skin. Bernice, Dr. King\u2019s daughter, points out that four years after giving that speech, actually, Dr. King also said this: \u2018A society that has done something special against the Negro for hundreds of years must now do something special for Negroes.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hostin went on to call Hughes a \u201ccharlatan\u201d and \u201cpawn by the right,\u201d attributing her name-calling to unnamed people in \u201cthe black community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve said that you\u2019re a conservative,\u201d Hostin added. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Hughes politely corrected and went back to responding to her point about the book before returning to Hostin\u2019s attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve been co-opted by anyone. I\u2019ve only voted twice, both for Democrats,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cI\u2019m an independent, I would vote for a Republican, probably a non-Trump Republican if they were compelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no evidence I\u2019ve been co-opted by anyone,\u201d Hughes added. \u201cI have an independent podcast. I\u2019m saying it because I feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hughes spoke with independent Substack journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/@taibbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matt Taibbi<\/a> about the exchange for a post published Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid [Hostin] apologize?\u201d Taibbi asked. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Hughes said. <\/p>\n<p>Hughes also reflected on his ABC guest appearance on an episode of Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast, where the host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13270071\/Joe-Rogan-View-Sunny-Hostin-Coleman-Hughes-colorblind-America-DEI.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called <\/a>\u201cThe View\u201d a \u201crabies-infested henhouse.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting necessarily for her to kind of try to ambush me in that way and attack my character in that way,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cI responded to it in the moment as I do, and I didn\u2019t expect it to go as viral as it did, but I think it arguably went more viral than anything I\u2019ve ever done before.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
