This incident raised concerns and led to\u200b demands for accountability. The parents embroiled in a significant parental \u200brights dispute\u2062 were \u200bfalsely accused by Meta of \u200cassociating \u200cthem with child sexual abuse. Sonja Shaw, the President of Chino Valley Unified School District, came under unjust scrutiny for advocating a policy requiring parental notification for gender dysphoria in\u2064 students. This controversy sparked\u200d alarm and calls for accountability.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>The Californians at the center of one of the biggest parents\u2019 rights fights in the nation right now were targeted last month when Meta falsely associated searches of their names with a warning about \u201cchild sexual abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President of Chino Valley Unified School District Sonja Shaw was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/national\/meta-falsely-associates-woman-with-sexual-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two parents\u2019 rights activists<\/a> who, after <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/12\/school-district-gears-up-to-fight-california-ag-trying-to-make-them-secretly-trans-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">supporting a policy<\/a> requiring school staff to notify parents if their child indicates gender dysphoria, faced unfounded smears from Meta\u2019s Facebook and Instagram. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2131705433\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b29a2a9d2756a87c1d81f97e2984c493 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b29a2a9d2756a87c1d81f97e2984c493\"><\/div>\n<p>A screenshot of searches on these platforms from an attorney for Shaw shows that, for an undefined period, searches including Shaw\u2019s name or position were blocked by a notification warning about child sexual abuse. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cChild sexual abuse is illegal,\u201d the popup stated. \u201cWe think that your search might be associated with child sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse or viewing sexual imagery of children can lead to imprisonment and other severe personal consequences. This abuse causes extreme harm to children and searching and viewing such material adds to that harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The search notification concluded with instructions on \u201chow to report any content as inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>After California State Assembly candidate Nick Wilson, who was also falsely associated with child abuse in the same fashion, contacted Meta, the social media platform removed the popup. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0abe7b5c7482827507754283f98f4c1d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0abe7b5c7482827507754283f98f4c1d\"><\/div>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/libertyjusticecenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Letter-to-Meta-on-Behalf-of-Sonja-Shaw.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Meta Chief Legal Officer Jennifer Newstead, Liberty Justice Center Senior Counsel M.E. Buck Dougherty III demanded on behalf of Shaw answers for why Meta \u201cdecided to initially issue its false public statement associating and linking her with child sexual abuse\u201d and whether the government was involved in the incident. <\/p>\n<p>Dougherty also asked for \u201cwritten assurance\u201d by March 21 promising \u201cthat Meta and its employees will never again target Ms. Shaw with another egregiously false statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeta\u2019s false \u2018sexual abuse\u2019 tagging appears as though it could be retaliation against Ms. Shaw and Mr. Wilson for taking political and legal stances with which Meta employees disagree. To the extent Meta and its employees are attempting to improperly interfere with ongoing litigation in California courts involving Ms. Shaw and the Chino Valley Unified School District, please be advised that Ms. Shaw intends to exhaust all available legal remedies available to her on her own behalf, as well as Chino Valley Unified School District\u2019s behalf,\u201d he concluded. <\/p>\n<p>LJC, which represents the CVUSD president in <a href=\"https:\/\/libertyjusticecenter.org\/cases\/california-v-chino-valley-unified-school-district\/\"><em>California v. Chino Valley Unified School District<\/em><\/a>, did not receive a reply, Dougherty told The Federalist. Meta did not respond to The Federalist\u2019s request for comment. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fcb7d4c634760f7449a85aa57508369c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fcb7d4c634760f7449a85aa57508369c\"><\/div>\n<p>Meta\u2019s unfounded accusation sparked a slew of social media backlash against Shaw. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey started posting vile things on my social media. I think one day I had a few thousand hate messages talking about \u2018die, you c-word,\u201d Shaw told The Federalist. <\/p>\n<p>Shaw also received two vulgar letters, examined by The Federalist, that threatened harm against her and her family. One letter was sent to her home. Another was sent via the U.S. Postal Service to her office with a return address falsely attributing the vile content to conservative parental rights state Sen. Mayes Middleton in Texas. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously he did not send it,\u201d Dougherty told The Federalist. \u201cI have personally spoken before this call with Senator Middleton and he is sharing that information with the law enforcement office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shaw said the letters also prompted an immediate response from her local law enforcement, which ordered extra security and drive-bys. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t even let my kids go outside to walk the dog right now. We\u2019re on high alert. You don\u2019t want to live like this, but you can\u2019t be stupid,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the intimidation campaign Meta appears to have helped launch, Shaw said she won\u2019t back down from protecting CVUSD kids. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want you to be scared. They want you to walk away They want control of the kids. They want to harm the kids. Everything that we\u2019re doing is fight against this. They wouldn\u2019t be fighting against us if they didn\u2019t want that control over children,\u201d Shaw said. \u201cSo as much as I\u2019m scared, I think about how beautiful and innocent the children are.
