The court filing became public on\u2063 Wednesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg rejected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s request that a judge delay the former president\u2019s hush money trial in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> on the grounds that it had attracted too much publicity, according to a court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/719783231\/Bragg-Opposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>filing<\/a> made public Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors from Bragg\u2019s office accused Trump of strategizing to indefinitely delay the trial, which is scheduled to begin with jury selection on April 15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendant appears to acknowledge that there is no end in sight to public coverage of this criminal proceeding, laying bare his strategy of obtaining an open-ended delay of the trial,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s defense attorneys had asked in a court filing last month for Judge Juan Merchan to delay the trial because of \u201cexceptionally prejudicial pretrial publicity, which is substantial, ongoing, and likely to increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The request was Trump\u2019s eighth attempt to convince Merchan to delay the trial, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>The defense attorneys did not specify how long of a delay they were seeking, only stating that the trial should be adjourned until \u201cprejudicial press coverage abates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They argued Trump\u2019s right to a fair trial was in jeopardy because the court would not be able to establish an impartial bench of jurors. They cited a survey of 400 New Yorkers that showed most respondents had been exposed to \u201chuge amounts of biased and unfair media coverage relating to this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued that they had \u201cdoubts about the reliability of the survey\u201d and that \u201cpublicity is unlikely to recede.\u201d They said that the process of jury selection inherently would result in an impartial jury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendant\u2019s request for an adjournment is based on the fundamentally flawed premise that any amount of pretrial publicity irreparably taints the jury pool,\u201d the prosecutors wrote. \u201cThat argument flouts bedrock law that expressly holds otherwise. Pretrial publicity, even when pervasive and adverse, \u2018does not inevitably lead to an unfair trial.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the prosecutors blamed Trump for some of the public attention on the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendant\u2019s own incessant rhetoric is generating significant publicity, and it would be perverse to reward defendant with an adjournment based on media attention he is actively seeking,\u201d the prosecutors wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s filing was made public on the same day that Merchan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/2952299\/trump-cant-delay-new-york-trial-presidential-immunity-grounds-judge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>denied<\/a> Trump\u2019s bid to delay his trial on presidential immunity grounds. The judge said he denied that request because it had not been filed in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s trial will focus on allegations brought by Bragg that the former president falsified financial records after the 2016 election to conceal hush money payments he made to a porn star.
