By almost the same percentage, voters in Kansas City defeated the sales tax to fund a new stadium for Major League Baseball\u2019s Royals and renovations to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Super Bowl champion Chiefs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of Kansas City and Jackson County love the Chiefs and the Royals,\u201d Democratic Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QuintonLucasKC\/status\/1775340799795908998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a><\/strong> on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after the polls closed. \u201cOver the months ahead, I look forward to working with the Chiefs and Royals to build a stronger, more open and collaborative process that will ensure the teams, their events and investments remain in Kansas City for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last December, the Jackson County Legislature first reviewed the proposal and voted 8-1 to place the tax on the April ballot. The Royals and the Chiefs pledged in early January to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/missouri\/article_dde6d076-ae73-11ee-95c2-db91f3ce7f48.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stay in Missouri<\/a><\/strong> if voters passed the 40-year tax increase.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-January, Jackson County Executive Frank White, a member of the Royals Hall of Fame and a member of the 1985 World Series Championship team, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/missouri\/article_c375e4b4-b64f-11ee-bb25-c36ab3e48ae7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vetoed the ordinance<\/a><\/strong> placing the sales tax on the ballot. The legislature then voted 7-2 to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/missouri\/article_b24e0a38-b977-11ee-93aa-235f6fe453a0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">override the veto<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kcballparkdistrict.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed plans<\/a><\/strong> in early January to build a new, $2 billion stadium in downtown Kansas City, approximately nine miles west of their current stadium in the Truman Sports Complex. In late February, weeks after winning the Super Bowl, the Chiefs <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/missouri\/article_8b0c99ca-d67e-11ee-a0f6-8bdcde2b97db.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed a renovation<\/a><\/strong> for Arrowhead Stadium. Clark Hunt, chairman and chief executive officer of the Chiefs, said his family will pay $300 million of the $800 million cost for the improvements.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals and Chiefs collaborated to form a committee and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mec.mo.gov\/CampaignFinanceReports\/Generator.aspx?Keys=B2G41dEVPKgI8cDcdGFsgJsm99XwPL2GnrTmU4CMoqvbSgKAMJTgPgFRpscSjrjUowHl2MrYFiZ%2f7mtJqqhmLJGUvJgxT3eW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent approximately $3 million<\/a><\/strong> to pass the increase, according to reports filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission.
