If Biden cannot turn the tide, his path to victory in 2024 becomes much more narrow \u2014 and in some crucial swing states, almost impossible. Piece three is about young voters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to driving out the vote of young people in the 2024 election, President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Joe Biden<\/a> may be his own worst enemy \u2014 possibly leaving the historically blue voting bloc on the table ahead of his November rematch against former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Biden has faced fierce backlash from young voters over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war, and organized protest vote efforts against the president in recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-Elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Democratic state primaries\">Democratic state primaries<\/a> have raised concerns about his reelection effort.<\/p>\n<p>Biden also faces headwinds from other key voting demographics that he carried in 2020, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2946165\/trump-biden-2024-black-voters-democrats-republicans-polls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Black\">black<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2946876\/base-jumpers-how-rumored-trump-vp-pick-could-help-seal-one-path-defeating-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Latino\">Latino<\/a> voters, likely making young voters showing up for him in November even more important to his reelection bid.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is real softness when it comes to Biden\u2019s reelection effort across many voter segments that he carried home in 2020,\u201d said Dritan Nesho, the CEO of HarrisX, pointing to women voters, young voters, and Hispanic and black voters.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic strategist James Carville, a former campaign strategist for Bill Clinton who vocally opposed Biden\u2019s 2024 bid, similarly sounded the alarm on Democrat\u2019s thinning support from minority groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s horrifying our numbers among younger voters, particularly younger blacks, younger Latinos \u2026 younger people of color,\u201d Carville said on his podcast on Sunday. \u201cWe\u2019re not shedding them, they\u2019re leaving in droves.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/03\/19\/us\/elections\/biden-uncommitted-vote-democrats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"average of one in 10 Democratic voters\">average of 1 in 10 Democratic voters<\/a> have opted to cast their vote as \u201cuncommitted\u201d in state presidential contests, according to the <em>New York Times<\/em>. In states where an \u201cuncommitted\u201d vote was not an option, 12% of voters opted for a minor Democratic candidate.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <em>Axios<\/em>-Generation Lab poll also found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.generationlab.org\/landing-page\/axios\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"58% of voters ages 18-34\">58% of voters ages 18-34<\/a> aren\u2019t even sure they will vote in the November election, a worrying sign for Biden as Generation Z and millennial voters favored him by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2021\/06\/30\/behind-bidens-2020-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"about 20 points in 2020\">about 20 points in 2020<\/a>, according to the Pew Research Center. <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s struggles to connect with the voting bloc could give Trump an opportunity in the general election. Recent polling shows Biden has lost support from the crucial voting bloc, and in some cases, shows Trump leading the president with younger voters.<\/p>\n<p>Trump led Biden 37% to 33% among voters under 35 in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/01\/01\/biden-trump-poll-odds-black-hispanic-young-voters\/72072111007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"USA Today\/Suffolk poll\"><em>USA Today<\/em>-Suffolk poll<\/a> released earlier this year. Trump also beat Biden in swing states by 47% to 40% with voters ages 18-34 in a recent Bloomberg News-Morning Consult poll.<\/p>\n<p>The polls could be outliers. However, evidence suggests Biden\u2019s lead over Trump with the voting bloc has narrowed significantly compared to 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump\u2019s hold on the Republican base has also continued to grow since he first won the Republican nomination in 2016, and for Gen Z Republicans, \u201call you know is Donald Trump,\u201d said John Conway, a Republican strategist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came to political consciousness within, you know, kind of the last decade, you don\u2019t have really an understanding of the Republican Party existing before Donald Trump,\u201d Conway said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nesho, who was also a co-director of a <a href=\"https:\/\/harvardharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/HHP_Feb2024_KeyResults.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Harvard CAPS\/ Harris poll\">Harvard CAPS-Harris poll<\/a> released in February that found while Biden led Trump by 9% among voters ages 18-24, 22% of young voters surveyed were undecided on who they planned to support in the 2024 election. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But when asked who they were leaning toward voting for, 55% of the undecided group broke for Trump while 45% went for Biden. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat 22% who are undecided can tip the election one way or another, and they\u2019re breaking for Trump,\u201d Nesho said. \u201cSo again, the trend is a worrying trend for Biden\u2019s reelection effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s 9-point advantage over Trump in the poll is a significant shrink from his 20-point advantage in 2020. And with Trump pulling in a larger portion of the young undecided voters, Biden\u2019s lead has the potential to shrink even further, according to Nesho.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, the story is not so much that these young voters have settled on Trump, but rather it\u2019s their disappointment with Biden,\u201d said Nesho, who explained the result was largely driven by \u201ceconomic frustrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA majority of 6 in 10 also believe Trump has committed crimes and view him as a threat to democracy,\u201d Nesho said.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic strategist Brad Bannon isn\u2019t convinced either that young voters\u2019 anger toward Biden will keep them from voting for him in November, saying that Trump being the GOP nominee will do the work of energizing young voters for Biden. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI think this Trump\u2019s presence on the ballot will drive the Biden vote,\u201d Bannon said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bannon pointed to issues such as abortion and LGBT rights as reasons why he doesn\u2019t believe young voters will go for Trump in 2024 as well, saying that from what he has seen \u201cin the Trump campaign, they seem to be doing everything they can to alienate voters under 30.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conway also doesn\u2019t foresee Trump peeling away younger voters from Biden. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump is just such a turnout machine for Democrats,\u201d Conway said. \u201cEven in the focus groups, right, these voters, they might not like Joe Biden, they certainly hate Donald Trump more. So Donald Trump isn\u2019t winning over these voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll reiterate while things don\u2019t look great for Biden right now, you know, I don\u2019t want to say that Biden is in trouble with these voters,\u201d Conway said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Voters on both sides have long expressed dissatisfaction over a Biden and Trump rematch, with only about a quarter of voters being excited about either\u2019s reelection, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnorc.org\/projects\/few-excited-many-angry-and-fearful-about-biden-trump-reelection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Associated Press<\/em>-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll<\/a> released in March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That trend was also seen in the Havard CAPS-Harris poll, which saw the majority of the 2,000 polled believed another choice was needed and were dissatisfied with the state of the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Historically reliant on key voting blocs, Democrats face a new challenge as President Biden may lack their unwavering support this election.
