This amount marks a\u200b decrease from the previous year but showcases \u200da consistent rising trend over the past two decades. \u2062The issue of improper payments has persisted\u2063 across government agencies, totaling $2.7 trillion since\u2063 2003. The \u2063GAO report unveiled that federal\u200d agencies \u2063disclosed $236 billion in &#8220;improper payments&#8221; in fiscal year 2023. While this amount\u200b decreased from the \u2063prior year, it \u200chighlights a continual upward \u2063trend over the past twenty years. Improper payments remain a systemic challenge, accumulating to a substantial $2.7 trillion since 2003.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>The federal government made nearly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quarter of a trillion dollars<\/a> in \u201cimproper payments\u201d in the last fiscal year, a congressional watchdog agency estimated.<\/p>\n<p>A Government Accountability Office (GAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/d24106927.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> unveiled last week said 14 agencies reported a total of $236 billion in botched payments in fiscal 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Here, \u201cimproper payments\u201d were defined as \u201cthose that should not have been made or were made in the incorrect amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GAO said agencies reported that $175 billion, or over 74% of the total, were attributed to overpayments.<\/p>\n<p>The total represented an $11 billion decrease from fiscal 2022, but GAO demonstrated in a graphs how \u201cimproper payments\u201d have, on average, risen over the past 20 years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The federal government has made an estimated $2.7 trillion in improper payments in the last 20 fiscal years\u2014including $236 billion in FY23.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s WatchBlog post looks at our new report on what is causing these errors &#038; what can be done to prevent them: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tbSrZG882J\">https:\/\/t.co\/tbSrZG882J<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/axpRrhNNtr\">pic.twitter.com\/axpRrhNNtr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 U.S. GAO (@USGAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USGAO\/status\/1772685603185815899?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 26, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Since fiscal 2003, the cumulative amount has totaled $2.7 trillion. GAO said improper payments have \u201cconsistently\u201d been an issue across the government.<\/p>\n<p>The $236 billion figure for fiscal 2023 is just an estimate, GAO cautioned, and it does not include some programs that agencies have determined to be \u201csusceptible\u201d to mismanaged payments.<\/p>\n<p>GAO listed the Health and Human Services Department\u2019s Temporary Assistance for Need Families program as an example.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>An analysis found that problematic expenditures were \u201cconcentrated\u201d in five program areas, including $51.1 billion for Medicare and $50.3 billion for Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>There was also $43.6 billion for Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, $21.9 billion for Earned Income Tax Credit, and $18.7 billion for Paycheck Protection Program Loan Forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>All other programs from which there was data accounted for $50.1 billion in \u201cimproper payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) commented on the topline $236 billion estimate for fiscal 2023 by taking a swipe at the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need accountability here! This is YOUR money the Biden admin took out of your wallet and wasted,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenRickScott\/status\/1774172902755123374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a post to X.<\/p>\n<p>GAO said it provided a draft of its report to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and comment, but \u201cOMB did not have any comments on the report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fiscal 2022, 14 of 24 agencies covered by the Chief Financial Officers Act of 1990 \u201ccomplied with applicable improper payment criteria, as reported by their agency inspectors general,\u201d GAO said.<\/p>\n<p>That number marked an increase from 2021, when GAO said inspectors general reported 10 agencies were compliant.<\/p>\n<p>GAO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/blog\/federal-government-made-236-billion-improper-payments-last-fiscal-year?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=blogsm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it has made \u201cnumerous\u201d recommendations and suggestions to Congress on ways to reduce payment errors.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report disclosed that federal agencies amassed $236 billion in &#8220;improper payments&#8221; in fiscal 2023.
