The group finds the judge&#8217;s conduct highly inappropriate, sparking controversy and concerns about impartiality. Critics view the judge&#8217;s remarks on Trump&#8217;s case and \u200dthe \u200cgag order as biased and prejudicial.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A conservative legal group filed a misconduct complaint Tuesday against a federal judge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Washington, D.C.<\/a>, after the judge gave a rare national television <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/2945075\/judges-rare-media-appearance-on-trump-gag-order-sparks-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>interview<\/a> on the topic of former President Donald Trump\u2019s gag order in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Davis, an ardent Trump supporter writing on behalf of the Article III Project, called Judge Reggie Walton\u2019s interview on CNN last week \u201chighly inappropriate\u201d and \u201chighly prejudicial\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/uploads-ssl.webflow.com\/65a5dbf7ffda034a47a316a2\/660c43179e8e5c463b0d86a1_Walton%20Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>letter<\/a> to the Judicial Council of the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>Walton, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, had spoken during his TV appearance about comments Trump recently made about the daughter of the judge who is overseeing Trump\u2019s hush money case in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very disconcerting to have someone making comments about a judge, and it\u2019s particularly problematic when those comments are in the form of a threat, especially if they\u2019re directed at one\u2019s family,\u201d Walton had said during his interview.<\/p>\n<p>Ethics rules prohibit judges from commenting on the merits of pending cases in any court, but they leave open the ability for judges to comment generally on court procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Walton spoke mostly in generic terms when asked about Trump\u2019s case, but at one point, he opined on the gag order the New York judge had issued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudge Walton must have known his interview was highly prejudicial to President Trump, who now must face jury pools\u2014in New York City (starting in less than two weeks), Washington, DC (where Judge Walton presides, including over many related January 6th criminal cases), Atlanta, and Florida\u2014who have now heard a sitting DC federal judge essentially accuse a criminal defendant of making \u2018violent threats\u2019 against another judge and his family for simply raising potential judicial bias by that judge presiding over his case,\u201d Davis wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump himself did not threaten New York Judge Juan Merchan or his daughter Loren, but he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/2950086\/trump-attorneys-revive-push-for-new-york-judge-to-recuse-himself-in-hush-money-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>blasted<\/a> them both repeatedly in statements of outrage online for what Trump perceived as a conflict of interest in the hush money case. Trump\u2019s criticisms prompted Juan Merchan to tighten restrictions on a gag order against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Loren Merchan has a senior role at a Democratic marketing firm that has provided millions of dollars worth of services to some of Trump\u2019s most outspoken rivals, such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Trump at one point called Merchan a \u201cRabid Trump Hater\u201d and shared a news report featuring her photo that accused her of profiting off of Trump\u2019s case. Juan Merchan argued that his gag order was necessary because remarks of that nature could inspire serious threats against Trump\u2019s targets.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Davis, in his complaint about Walton, defended Trump, saying the presumptive Republican nominee was \u201csimply raising evidence\u201d to expose Juan Merchan\u2019s alleged conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a criminal defendant truly makes violent threats, a prosecutor can charge him with obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and related crimes,\u201d Davis said. \u201cBut we have entered very dangerous territory as a country when attorneys accuse a criminal defendant of making a \u2018violent threat\u2019 against a judge for simply raising evidence of the judge\u2019s potential bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A conservative legal group filed a misconduct complaint against a federal judge in Washington, D.C.
