Jim \u2063Jordan, the committee obtained documents showing a strategy to hinder advertisers \u2062from working with certain news \u200dsources, \u2064raising concerns about censorship and monopolistic behavior. Jim Jordan (R-OH), obtained documents from the World Federation of Advertisers that show how it implemented a strategy to prevent major advertisers from doing business with disfavored news outlets. The coordinated effort could have the effect of bankrupting news organizations that don\u2019t get the stamp of approval.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cThe World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) through its Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) initiative may be acting inconsistent with U.S. antitrust laws and congressional intent by coordinating GARM members\u2019 efforts to demonetize and eliminate disfavored content online,\u201d Jordan wrote in March 27 <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2024-03-27%20JDJ%20to%20Crew%20Grimes%20-%20Diageo%20re%20GARM%20steer%20team.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> demanding further documents from advertisers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEvidence the Committee has obtained suggests that GARM members, led by Steer Team members, are colluding to demonetize conservative platforms and voices. Further, this coordination does not always revolve around \u2018brand safety\u2019 and \u2018harmful\u2019 content as GARM publicly claims, but instead the desire to censor conservative and other views that GARM members disfavor,\u201d Jordan added.<\/p>\n<p>The letters indicate that documents obtained by the committee suggest that the group tried to blackball mainstream conservative news organizations, specifically asking for \u201ccommunications referring or relating to conservative news outlets, including Fox News, Daily Wire, and Breitbart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letters went to major corporations on GARM\u2019s \u201csteering committee\u201d \u2014 Unilever, Procter &#038; Gamble, GroupM, Diageo, and Mars \u2014 saying the documents \u201cdirectly connect\u201d the companies with such efforts. The documents in the active investigation have not been released to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The letters seek communications from the companies \u201crelating to the categorization, demonetization, or elimination of online speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They also ask for communications discussing \u201cchanges to X following Elon Musk\u2019s acquisition of the company,\u201d when many advertisers left the platform in protest of the left-wing Jack Dorsey being replaced by the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>The probe suggests that the companies could be held individually responsible for the actions of the group they created, and that GARM may act in a cartel-like manner, even though many of its members are nominally competitors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>WFA announced the GARM\u2019s creation at the 2019 Cannes festival, a gathering of global elites, amidst complaints about \u201cdisinformation\u201d and \u201cfake news,\u201d but later that year said it would become a flagship project of the World Economic Forum (WEF)\u2019s \u201cPlatform for Shaping the Future of Media, Entertainment and Culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an announcement that seemed like something from Darth Vader, the World Economic Forum stated, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/impact\/media-alliance-scales-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Global Alliance<\/a> is creating a safe media ecosystem.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGARM focuses on viewer safety for consumers, reducing risks for advertisers, developing credibility for digital platforms and, more broadly, ensuring a sustainable online ecosystem,\u201d it said. \u201cPartners involved in the Global Alliance for Responsible Media through the Forum\u2019s Platform for Shaping the Future of Media, Entertainment and Sport include companies such as LEGO Group, Procter &#038; Gamble, Unilever, NBC Universal \u2013 MSNBC, Dentsu Group, WPP (through GroupM), Interpublic Group, Publicis Groupe, Omnicom Group, Facebook and Google.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ben-shapiro-details-the-global-entities-working-to-demonetize-and-deplatform-conservative-voices\">Ben Shapiro Details The Global Entities Working To \u2018Demonetize And Deplatform\u2019 Conservative Voices<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, GARM added \u201cmisinformation\u201d to the types of online content that it views as unethical to run ads against.<\/p>\n<p>It said companies should look to firms like NewsGuard, the Global Disinformation Index, and the Journalism Trust Initiative to decide which news outlets to do business with, writing that the groups \u201ccan help ensure that ad buyers and users looking for news can <a href=\"https:\/\/wfanet.org\/knowledge\/item\/2022\/03\/07\/Navigating-digital-media-safety-and-suitability-in-the-time-of-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">be in safe and suitable places<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GARM says it provides members with \u201cBrand Safety.\u201d For-profit firms like Newsguard have shown what that means in practice: Companies that might buy ads are given lists of what TV programs, channels, podcasts, or newspapers are either safe to advertise on or should be avoided. This is billed as avoiding risks to their reputation or boycotts\u2014essentially saying that if a company wants to avoid boycotts from the Left or smear campaigns, they should not do business with certain media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/wfanet.org\/leadership\/garm\/garm-resource-directory-%28weblog-detail-page%29\/2022\/06\/20\/GARM-3-Years-of-Progress#:~:text=GARM's%20launch%20was%20propelled%20forward,had%20been%20no%20established%20protocols.\">progress report<\/a> in 2022, GARM boasted of qualities that, viewed in another light, could show anti-competitive practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGARM\u2019s launch was propelled forward by <i>uncommon collaboration<\/i>, a unique way of working recognizing that all sectors of the advertising industry and companies benefit from partnering to create new brand safety standards and solutions that could be accepted industry-wide, where there had been no established protocols,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge of meaningfully steering the entire media ecosystem was \u201cbig,\u201d it said, yet GARM included 61 major companies that buy a large portion of the advertising in the world, as well as 35 separate industry associations that represent many more advertisers.<\/p>\n<p>The WFA, along with the Global Disinformation Index, Newsguard, and other firms that would profit from \u201cdisinformation\u201d crackdowns, <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/library\/signatories-2022-strengthened-code-practice-disinformation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lobbied<\/a> the European Union for a \u201cStrengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation\u201d in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Companies that want to advertise are likely to defer judgement to such nominal \u201cexperts\u201d about who is credible, leading to wide-scale, coordinated blacklists. But those purported experts have rated even the most measured and staid news outlets as risky if they are conservative, such as the New York Post and Reason Magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Such news outlet raters often assign credibility ratings based on how closely news outlets hew to official government lines, dinging outlets for questioning, for example, whether COVID could have come from a lab \u2014 a theory discouraged by the government at the time, but now largely supported by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Newsguard even worked directly with the U.S. government, leading The Daily Wire and the Federalist to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/daily-wire-and-the-federalist-sue-biden-state-department-over-censorship-effort\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sue the State Department<\/a> in a lawsuit that alleged \u201cone of the most audacious, manipulative, secretive, and gravest abuses of power and infringements of First Amendment rights by the federal government in American history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep.
