The lockdown affecting 23 prisons in\u2062 the eclipse&#8217;s path violates their religious\u2063 freedom. The inmates, followers of various faiths, argue that the eclipse holds significant religious importance. Six inmates\u2062 in a New York prison have \u200ctaken legal action against the state corrections department for enforcing a lockdown coinciding with\u200c the\u2064 April 8 solar \u200ceclipse. This directive, impacting 23 prisons along\u200d the \u2064eclipse&#8217;s route, \u2063is contested \u2064by the inmates on grounds of religious freedom infringement. They maintain that \u200bthe eclipse carries profound religious significance for them.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Six inmates at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"New York\">New York<\/a> prison filed a lawsuit against the state corrections department for implementing a lockdown the evening of the April 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/eclipse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"solar eclipse\">solar eclipse<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The lockdown, which will take place across 23 state prisons in the path of totality, is a violation of the six inmates\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/religious-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"religious\">religious<\/a> freedom to be unable to partake in a religious event, the March 29 complaint says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA solar eclipse is a rare, natural phenomenon with great religious significance to many,\u201d according to the complaint. <\/p>\n<p>The six men being held at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility claim that they are a Baptist, a Seventh-day Adventist, a Muslim, an atheist, and two allege they are practitioners of Santeria.<\/p>\n<p>The lockdown was implemented to prevent security breaches, and inmates will remain in their housing units from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13263403\/new-york-prisons-shut-2024-solar-eclipse-lawsuit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reported\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Visitation at the 23 prisons will be <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYSDOCCS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>canceled<\/a> and visitation at all other facilities will be suspended after 2 p.m. that day. <\/p>\n<p>In March, the plaintiff who is an atheist was given permission to view the solar eclipse with state-provided glasses prior to the lockdown announcement, according to the lawsuit.
