Lapid, a \u2063political rival of Prime Minister Benjamin \u200dNetanyahu, criticized Netanyahu&#8217;s response\u2063 to recent events. \u2062Lapid emphasized the need for\u200b elections and \u2064international \u2062support to navigate current \u2062challenges facing Israel.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Israeli<\/a> opposition leader Yair Lapid will travel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Washington D.C.\">Washington, D.C.,<\/a> next week, according to Israeli media.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of his trip will be \u201cstrengthening the Israel-U.S. strategic relationship, bringing the hostages back home, and Israel\u2019s role in the region,\u201d an unnamed person from Lapid\u2019s office told the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/lapid-to-visit-washington-next-week-for-talks-on-hostages-bilateral-ties-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Times of Israel<\/a><\/em>  on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Lapid is a political rival of Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>, whom he has been critical of for his handling of the Oct. 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Hamas<\/a> terrorist attack and Israel\u2019s subsequent military response in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Lapid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/lapid-ive-never-been-more-worried-for-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> holding elections before the end of the war \u201cis not ideal,\u201d but he stressed that it\u2019s necessary \u201cbecause this government won\u2019t fix the budget, won\u2019t fix the [Haredi] draft, and, especially, won\u2019t bring home the hostages. And you know what? (Saul Loeb\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is an existential moment\u201d for Israel, he added. \u201cThe people who were supposed to keep our children safe failed to do so. \u2026 The soul of the state is bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lapid said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2019s (D-NY) call for new Israeli elections in mid-April is evidence that Netanyahu is \u201closing Israel\u2019s biggest supporters in the U.S.\u201d and is \u201ccausing significant damage to the national effort to win the war and maintain Israel\u2019s security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken\u00a0met virtually with Israeli officials, including national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and Strategic Affairs Minster Ron Dermer, to discuss Israel\u2019s intended operations in Rafah. More than a million Palestinian civilians are sheltering in Rafah due to the conflict, and Israel has yet to detail publicly its plans to keep them safe in its operations.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has remained supportive of Israel\u2019s war against Hamas even as he has gotten more critical of Israel\u2019s conduct. The U.S. administration continues to provide weapons to Israel.
