The State Department supports intelligence \u200cfindings while the Senate Intelligence Committee remains vigilant.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/department-of-defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Department of Defense<\/a> said on Monday that a senior official displayed symptoms of the mysterious illness known as \u201cHavana syndrome\u201d at a NATO summit last year, a day after a joint media investigation found evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Russia<\/a> is likely behind the attacks, contradictory to the findings of the U.S. intelligence community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/havana-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Havana\u00a0syndrome<\/a>\u201d\u00a0is the name given to a mysterious neurological condition that a small group of American diplomats and spies overseas have reported since 2016. U.S. diplomats and members of the intelligence community in different locations reported symptoms including dizziness, head pain, vision problems, cognitive troubles, vertigo, and possibly traumatic brain injuries beginning at the U.S. Embassy in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cuba<\/a> in 2016. <\/p>\n<p>An unnamed senior Department of Defense official who attended last year\u2019s NATO summit showed signs of \u201cHavana syndrome,\u201d Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters on Monday. The official was not a part of Defense Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lloyd-austin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Lloyd Austin\u2019s<\/a> delegation that traveled to Vilnius, Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Intelligence Community has much work to do to get to the bottom of who and what are behind the events that have harmed, and in some cases permanently disabled, our diplomats, their relatives, as well as intelligence personnel in numerous locations across the globe,\u201d Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThe Senate Intelligence Committee continues to conduct oversight of the IC\u2019s work on determining what is behind Havana syndrome and AHIs. We also remain committed to ensuring those who have suffered receive proper care and benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Federal public health officials have continued to refer to these sets of symptoms as anomalous health incidents, or AHIs.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a highly anticipated intelligence community review found it\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/?p=1471874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very unlikely<\/a>\u201d that a foreign adversary was responsible for some sort of directed energy attack that led to the symptoms people experienced. <\/p>\n<p>CBS\u2019s <em>60 Minutes<\/em>, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/havana-syndrome-russia-evidence-60-minutes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>joint investigation<\/a> with the<em> Insider<\/em> and <em>Der Spiegel<\/em>, reported on Sunday possible links between a Russian military intelligence unit and the attacks. Their report first broke the news that a senior DOD official seemingly got Havana syndrome during the NATO summit last year, which Singh confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department stood behind the intelligence community\u2019s assessment that it\u2019s unlikely a foreign adversary is responsible for the mysterious illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been the broad conclusion of the intelligence community since March 2023 that it is unlikely a foreign adversary is responsible for these anomalous health incidents,\u201d spokesman Matthew Miller said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that the intelligence community has investigated extensively and continues to look at. We will look at new information as it comes in and make assessments inside the State Department and with our intelligence community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A House Intelligence Committee spokesperson told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that ranking member Jim Himes (D-CT) is \u201caware\u201d of the new reporting and \u201cwill make appropriate inquiries with the Intelligence Community based on the information presented publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the earliest reports, the Committee has been focused on ensuring that those who experience AHIs receive all the care and support they need,\u201d the spokesperson continued. \u201cWe will continue to oversee this important issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre noted the intelligence community\u2019s previous findings during Monday\u2019s briefing and added, \u201cWe\u2019re going to continue to do a comprehensive examination of the effects here that we\u2019re seeing and the potential causes of AHI. That\u2019s something that we\u2019re going to continue to look into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March, the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/2925383\/nih-study-finds-no-mri-detectable-brain-abnormalities-associated-havana-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"published\">published<\/a> the findings of a five-year-long research project that evaluated more than 80 government employees and their families who had experienced the symptoms associated with Havana syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Although federal researchers acknowledged the severity of their subjects\u2019 symptoms in the report, published in <em>JAMA<\/em>, they reported that the patients as a whole demonstrated no MRI-detectable brain changes that could be the biological cause of the AHIs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/?utm_source=google&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=WE_Search_Brand-Keyword_2024&#038;gad_source=1&#038;gclid=CjwKCAjwtqmwBhBVEiwAL-WAYaajmPKA68zLFxt5arYG9kPeL3VEmVqVM8tFYH0Xs125mHjopYyZehoCk_0QAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we did not identify significant differences in participants with AHIs, it\u2019s important to acknowledge that these symptoms are very real, cause significant disruption in the lives of those affected and can be quite prolonged, disabling and difficult to treat,\u201d said Leighton Chan, chief of rehabilitation medicine and acting chief scientific officer of the NIH Clinical Center and lead author on one of the papers.<\/p>\n<p>The NIH did not respond to the <em>Washington Examiner\u2019s<\/em> request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Defense reported that a senior official showed &#8220;Havana syndrome&#8221; symptoms at a NATO summit.
