Bowser emphasizes the importance of accountability and providing \u2062opportunities to combat crime effectively.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Washington D.C.\">Washington<\/a> Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/muriel-bowser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Washington D.C.\">Muriel Bowser<\/a> said she is encouraged by the recent crime trends in the district amid early signs that several crimes in the area may be decreasing.<\/p>\n<p>After spiking crime in 2023 sparked national headlines and prompted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/d-c-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"D.C. Council\">Council of the District of Columbia<\/a> to pass emergency legislation, followed by another comprehensive bill passed last month, Bowser explained why she felt \u201cvery good\u201d about the new trends on CNBC\u2019s <em>Squawk Box<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just got an update from my deputy mayor, and crime is down among, in all categories in Washington, D.C., especially those categories that so troubled us last year with robbery and carjacking, down more than 30%,\u201d Bowser said. \u201cSo we\u2019ve done the things that we know will reset our public safety ecosystem \u2014 starting last summer with an emergency crime bill and, most recently, just a couple of months ago, with a new crime bill that really will reset our public safety ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we feel very good that we\u2019re moving in the right direction not just with crime, but with attendance up in our schools, with our population growing, with new restaurants opening \u2014 more per capita than any place in the United States,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n<p>Bowser said a big part of the push to crack down on crime comes from \u201caccountability\u201d and \u201cgiving people opportunities\u201d via the new crime legislation. She also added that while it takes time for people to notice crime improving, she has heard and felt positive progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we see, and that\u2019s why we see, I think, the very dramatic increase that we\u2019re experiencing this year. Sometimes it takes time for people in the press and the community to really hear and feel that progress. But I see it every day in the energy around the city and the very brave men and women that protect our streets each and every day,\u201d Bowser said.<\/p>\n<p>She also added that the district\u2019s Metropolitan Police Department is hiring, as the department has implemented a hiring bonus in an attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2582066\/district-of-crime-what-happened-to-washingtons-shrinking-police-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"staff up\">staff up<\/a> Washington\u2019s crime-fighting force.<\/p>\n<p>Early crime statistics for 2024 have shown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/2911036\/capital-punishment-dc-crime-stats-in-early-2024-could-be-on-track-to-rebound-after-deadly-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"argue\">improvement<\/a> over last year\u2019s figures, but some activists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/2918675\/capital-punishment-what-are-the-realistic-options-on-the-table-to-cure-the-dc-crime-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"argue\">argue<\/a> the district must do more to help cure the crime crisis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During her CNBC appearance on Monday, Bowser also touted the deal to keep the Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals in the district after a plan to build an arena in Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2941997\/washington-wizards-capitals-wont-move-from-dc-virginia-proposal-will-not-move-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"fell through.\">fell through.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bowser said Washington was able to keep the teams in the district because they offered a \u201creal deal\u201d while the Virginia deal, which stalled in the state legislature, was \u201ctoo good to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed optimism at the current crime trends in the district, indicating a potential decrease in various crimes.
