Its non-profit status, however, could be eliminated by a pending judgment from the Internal Revenue Service, which claims that the organization engaged in electioneering. The Center disputes the claim, and says the investigation into its work comes only because the IRS is weaponized against conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Greenfield, a Vice President of the Freedom Center, says the IRS has taken issue\u00a0with articles the Freedom Center wrote about Hillary Clinton and Trump in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basis for the investigation is that we\u2019ve been covering the election,\u201d Greenfield explained to The Daily Wire. \u201cLeftist nonprofits are actually engaged in straight up electioneering. They register voters. They fund litigation, they\u2019re engaged in protest. All we did was engage in journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The IRS complaint, which began in 2019, hinges on the claim that the Freedom Center engaged in electioneering. The IRS allegation specifically highlighted journalistic work from the Freedom Center, which claimed \u201cthat Hillary Clinton had violated U.S. espionage laws and obstructed justice by destroying 30,000 emails subpoenaed by the United States Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key rule we were alleged to have violated was to have participated in a political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office,\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/the-weaponized-irs-has-spent-5-years-trying-to-destroy-the-freedom-center-without-your-help-they-may-succeed\/\">article<\/a> from David Horowitz explains, before pointing out that the Freedom Center has never endorsed a candidate nor involved itself in any campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The Freedom Center maintains that the IRS investigation is politically motivated, and Greenfield believes it\u2019s \u201cno coincidence that this is happening right before an election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenfield explained that the IRS complaint is the latest, and most serious, in a series of attacks against the Freedom Center. Color of Change, a now-defunct non-profit established by Van Jones, waged a campaign called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170819141749\/https:\/\/www.bloodmoney.org\/\">Blood Money<\/a>\u201d against the Freedom Center in an attempt to get the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/amgreatness.com\/2018\/09\/09\/a-new-color-of-censorship-from-the-splc\/\">de-banked<\/a> by Visa and Mastercard.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign, which came after the leftwing Southern Poverty Law Center listed the Freedom Center as a hate group, resulted in Mastercard briefly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/david-horowitz-freedom-center-declares-victory-frontpagemagcom\/\">refusing to process payments<\/a> to the organization. Then, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/6Gx0X\">series<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/tax-exempt-charities-should-not-be-propaganda-organs\/2017\/06\/09\/f7bb7d5e-4d3a-11e7-987c-42ab5745db2e_story.html\">articles<\/a> from The Washington Post calling for the Freedom Center to lose its non-profit status, the IRS launched its complaint in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Now that complaint threatens to destroy the organization entirely. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at $600,000 in legal fees and we\u2019re a pretty small organization that employs very few people,\u201d Greenfield explained.<\/p>\n<p>While the Freedom Center maintains that it and other organizations have been politically targeted by the IRS, it also asserts that leftist organizations that appear to engage in genuine electioneering get let off the hook.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations by the Freedom Center\u2019s publication, Front Page Magazine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontpagemag.com\/the-irs-went-down-to-georgia-to-steal-an-election\/\">point to organizations<\/a> like ProGeorgia, which boasted that it conducted \u201c31,000 face-to-face conversations, 10 million texts, and 133,000 phone conversations\u201d and registered \u201ctens of thousands for the midterm election\u201d so that \u201cvoters of color turned out in early voting at higher levels than their white counterparts.\u201d There\u2019s also Black Votes Matter, which partnered with the SPLC to drive voter turnout in the Peach State.<\/p>\n<p>Black Votes Matter head LaTosha Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/blackvotersmatterfund.org\/news\/black-voters-in-g-a-made-history-once-again-with-record-breaking-turnout-in-senate-runoff-elections\/\">bragged<\/a> that \u201cGeorgia voters practically handed victories to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris with a historic election outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While leftist organizations influence elections and boast of the results, the Freedom Center says that its case is just the latest instance of the IRS being weaponized against conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/10\/27\/560308997\/irs-apologizes-for-aggressive-scrutiny-of-conservative-groups\">admitted<\/a> to mistreating conservative organizations, many of which were associated with the Tea Party movement, by applying \u201cheightened scrutiny and inordinate delays\u201d when handling tax exempt status requests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to say we\u2019re a unique target,\u201d Greenfield said. \u201cWe\u2019re not a unique target. There\u2019s a larger phenomenon going on here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now the Freedom Center is at risk of dissolution as a result of the IRS\u2019s actions. Greenfield noted that the organization expects to receive a final judgment from the IRS in the coming months, bringing the situation to a decisive crossroads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that point we face a choice between fighting them directly in court or just closing up shop, and we\u2019re an organization with a lot of history,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been around for decades.
