Whitaker\/The Post And Courier via AP, Pool, file)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to his two life sentences, Murdaugh was ordered earlier to spend another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2434271\/alex-murdaugh-sentenced-to-27-years-for-stealing-money-from-friends-and-clients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"27 years in prison\">27 years in prison<\/a> in state court on financial crime charges that included money laundering, breach of trust, conspiracy, forgery, and tax evasion.  <\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel said his sentence will run concurrently with Murdaugh\u2019s state sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s sentencing hearing was supposed to be straightforward \u2014 the government and Murdaugh had already hammered out a deal \u2014 but was complicated after prosecutors alleged last week that Murdaugh failed a polygraph test, thereby violating the terms of the plea agreement that required him to be honest. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors also identified 11 new financial victims and another $1.3 million in stolen money. <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued Murdaugh spent most of his career \u201cdeceiving everyone in his personal and professional circles \u2014 unburdened by his own conscience,\u201d and added that the \u201cscope and pervasiveness of Murdaugh\u2019s deceit is staggering.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe ranks as one of the most prolific fraudsters this state has ever seen,\u201d they said. <\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh denied the claims, and his lawyers Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin asked the judge to disregard the government\u2019s allegations he was untruthful. They argued that the person administering the polygraph test was \u201codd\u201d in his approach and accused him of wording questions improperly. They also claimed federal authorities refused to share the raw results of the test with them and claimed that polygraphs were notoriously unreliable and that their accuracy has been disputed for nearly six decades. <\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh has admitted to stealing from clients, including those closest to him. When his former housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, died under mysterious conditions at the family home, he promised to take care of her family. Instead, he schemed to steal $4 million in a wrongful death settlement with the family\u2019s insurer. <\/p>\n<p>The length of punishment for Murdaugh\u2019s financial\u00a0crimes does little to change his fate as long as the murder convictions against him stick. <\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh\u2019s defense team sought a retrial in the murder case, arguing that Rebecca Hill, a court clerk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2823461\/alex-murdaugh-new-trial-jury-tampering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"swayed jurors\">swayed jurors<\/a> after she made comments about Murdaugh. Hill has denied the most serious allegations, including telling jurors not to be \u201cfooled\u201d by Murdaugh\u2019s defense. She also allegedly had a private conversation with the jury forewoman in the bathroom and quipped to jurors when deliberations began that this \u201cshouldn\u2019t take us long.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued that Hill\u2019s comments didn\u2019t do anything to change the outcome in the case. <\/p>\n<p>In January, a\u00a0judge denied Murdaugh\u2019s request for a new trial. <\/p>\n<p>Hill has since resigned from her role as Colleton County\u2019s clerk of court. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER \">CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s hearing largely ends Murdaugh\u2019s time in court.
