Several\u200b companies are cautioning\u200b employees about\u200b possible schedule cuts due to the new law, mainly impacting fast-food chains with over 60 \u200clocations nationwide.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>California<\/a> fast-food workers are getting a pay boost on April 1 that is coming with some unintended consequences. <\/p>\n<p>After the state legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/30\/1241451631\/california-fast-food-20-minimum-wage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>approved<\/a> a law hiking the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 an hour, some companies have warned their employees that they will be scheduled for fewer hours as a result of the wage increase. The <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>bill<\/a>, which increases wages for fast-food companies with more than 60 locations nationwide, has put some managers of these chains in a tricky position. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am used to being a champion of labor, and I\u2019m in this odd position,\u201d Michaela Mendelsohn, who manages six El Pollo Loco restaurants and oversees more than 170 employees, told NPR. \u201cWe\u2019re having to get more efficient. So really, what\u2019s left is \u2026 to reduce labor hours. And I hate saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many employees will receive a 25% wage increase as a result of the new law. California is one of the most expensive states in the country to live in. And more than half of its employees work in the fast-food industry. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s super great,\u201d said Sandra Jauregui, who will see a $120 increase in her paycheck as a result of the bill. \u201cAt the very least, it\u2019ll give me some breathing room \u2026 and make it easier to pay the rent and other bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is, however, worried about her co-workers who could see their hours cut. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy boss told me that he won\u2019t reduce my hours but that he will cut others\u2019 hours,\u201d Jauregui said.<\/p>\n<p>Some restaurants have already warned that price hikes are likely to affect customers as well. Jack in the Box, Starbucks, McDonald\u2019s, and Chipotle said prices could go up 2.5% to 3.5%. Pizza Hut said the wage increase was the cause of the company warning nearly 1,000 employees they could lose their jobs. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis policy is going to be really different in different parts of California,\u201d said Jacob Vigdor, a University of Washington professor who studied a similar wage increase in Seattle. <\/p>\n<p>Vigdor\u2019s research on the increase from $9.47 to $13 an hour in Washington didn\u2019t have much of an impact on the number of jobs available but did find that workers lost hours. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe restaurant business is a really tough business,\u201d Vigdor said. \u201cRestaurants open and close all the time, even in places where the minimum wage hasn\u2019t changed for more than a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bill was previously at the center of a controversy involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2898413\/newsom-claims-panera-bread-isnt-exempt-from-californias-new-minimum-wage-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Panera Bread<\/a>. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) came under fire following reports the chain was not going to have to increase its pay for employees due to an exemption in the bill for companies that bake their own bread on-site. <\/p>\n<p>The loophole appeared to be a favor for Glenn Flynn, who owns dozens of Panera Bread locations in California and has donated $220,000 to Newsom\u2019s campaigns since 2017.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California fast-food employees will see their pay increase to $20 an hour on April 1, but this raise may lead to reduced work hours.
