He\u2019s executive director of North Carolina Ports.<\/p>\n<p>Six workers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/maryland\/article_72c1453e-eb62-11ee-9ea1-ef63004526cf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>on the Key Bridge<\/strong><\/a> died and two were rescued early Tuesday morning when the Dali, a cargo ship flying Singapore colors, lost power and steering resulting in a crash into a bridge support. Ninety seconds before, the crew onboard was able to get out a mayday call and authorities sealed both ends of the bridge from traffic.<\/p>\n<p>There were no fatalities aboard the ship.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge fell into the Patapsco River and is expected to be replaced. It carries I-695 traffic around the southeastern side of Baltimore, though only about 31,000 vehicles a day \u2013 mostly commercial, such as trucking. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/maryland\/article_8217f848-ec84-11ee-96e8-f78f78cab9ff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Costs and timeframe are unknown<\/strong><\/a>, with various guesses depending on the kind of bridge rebuilt, expedited permitting, and availability of construction companies as well as steel.<\/p>\n<p>Vessel traffic is expected to resume far sooner than the bridge will be rebuilt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/virginia\/article_ec3ccd84-ec70-11ee-a7a7-9f633529f64f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Norfolk, Va.<\/strong><\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/new_york\/article_91b6e942-ed12-11ee-a13f-4b8f143577de.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Port of New York\/New Jersey<\/strong><\/a> are already seeing increased activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be closely monitoring as this unfolds and will apply the lessons learned appropriately in North Carolina to ensure that our citizens and businesses continue to have safe routes to travel,\u201d Clark said. \u201cIn North Carolina, large cargo vessels do not navigate under bridges to access either of our ports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While specific businesses line the harbor in Baltimore, Wilmington does have useful offerings. Morehead City is four miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The ports handle more than 4 million tons of general cargo a year.<\/p>\n<p>Generally easy access is available to Interstates 40 (which begins in Wilmington going to California), 95, 85, 77 and 74, and U.S. 17 and U.S. 70.
