Various reports highlight the increase in crimes, including human \u2063trafficking and illegal labor exploitation, linked to illegal immigration under Biden&#8217;s administration.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>When President Biden\u2019s supporters attacked him for describing the man who allegedly murdered Georgia co-ed Laken Riley as an \u201cillegal,\u201d they shined a light on one of the most contested words in American politics.<\/p>\n<p>The progressive push to describe border crossers as undocumented or unauthorized can also serve to downplay and obscure the massive issue of crime perpetrated and spawned by the influx of millions of migrants since Biden was elected \u2014 often in ways that leave the migrants themselves as victims.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-639611231\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-92d0ba21909c99aca4cf17ecddd325bb fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-92d0ba21909c99aca4cf17ecddd325bb\"><\/div>\n<p>While migrant advocates argue that illegal arrivals commit crimes at lower rates than Americans, the claim is unverifiable because the federal government and most states do not break down crimes by immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>Criminologists also note that it ignores the vast web of statutory crimes concurrent with illegal immigration \u2014 drug smuggling, human trafficking, child labor violations, prostitution, the black market in employment, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>What remains undeniable by the law of averages is that the massive surge in immigration since the Biden administration relaxed border policies \u2014 a surge it puts at more than 4 million people, but other sources put at millions more \u2014 has been accompanied by much more crime, however unquantifiable.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of migrants, though not all, run afoul of laws by their situation more than by overtly malign criminal intent. But their first step across the border is a lawbreaking one, and it is often followed by life on the law\u2019s margins: living in the U.S. without insurance or proper work papers, providing illicit labor for unscrupulous or blas\u00e9 employers, turning to black markets for counterfeit Social Security cards, and often becoming targets for robbers or extortionists. Their desire to come to America creates a vast pool of criminality involving them or those illegally profiting from them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5cb7aed340faf56d2e0658464ee9ff08 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5cb7aed340faf56d2e0658464ee9ff08\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOn some criminal matters, like homicides, we\u2019ve got a good sense of the scale there whether we solve them all or not,\u201d said Alex Nowrasteh, a vice president at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/cato-handbook-policymakers\/cato-handbook-policymakers-9th-edition-2022\/immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cato Institute<\/a> who studies the economic impact of immigration. \u201cBut some of this other stuff is like all black markets in that it is opaque behavior. We don\u2019t know how much crime there might be and in a sense I think it\u2019s sort of unknowable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An outer layer of this criminal onion is the so-called \u201ccoyotes\u201d who smuggle migrants to the southern border. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/data-and-analysis\/glosom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime<\/a>, which is sympathetic to the plight of refugees, paints a brutally stark picture of the\u00a0exploitive lawbreakers who lurk behind the caravans and trucks and trains heading north.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome criminal groups view migrants as simply one of many commodities to be smuggled, alongside drugs and firearms,\u201d it noted in a 2018 report. \u201cSince the smuggling of migrants is a highly profitable illicit activity with a relatively low risk of detection, it is attractive to criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations also acknowledges the near impossibility of quantifying these criminal enterprises. \u201cAssessing the real size of this crime is a complex matter, owing to its underground nature and the difficulty of identifying when irregular migration is being facilitated by smugglers,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-db733b6cab7129e9c750df6bfb581196 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-db733b6cab7129e9c750df6bfb581196\"><\/div>\n<p>In order to pay back these smugglers or the people willing to \u201chost\u201d them in the U.S., many migrants \u2014 no one knows how many \u2014 are often dragooned into illicit behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven people who may come here with no criminal intent at all may find themselves involved in some sort of criminal activity because the cartels that control the immigration channels are going to get their money one way or another,\u201d said Ira Mehlman, media director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federation of American Immigration Reform<\/a>, which seeks policies to seal the border from illegal penetrations. \u201cGoing to work for the cartels is one way they can pay off their debts. Others may find themselves pressed into indentured servitude or, even worse, being trafficked in the sex trades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although they get little attention in the United States, the crimes associated with migration begin south of the border. Since Joe Biden sent a clear signal while running for president that he would welcome mass immigration, tens of thousands of people along the Central American isthmus have been inspired to migrate and have become victims too. Vulnerable and poor people making the more than 2,000-mile trek from the Dari\u00e9n Gap in Panama to the Texas border have been preyed upon physically and economically, contributing to the enormous human cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs millions of people have put themselves needlessly in the hands of cartels and smugglers to make the journey to the Southwest border, an untold number have suffered violence, degradation, and abuse at the hands of these ruthless organizations, while countless others have perished or simply been left to die in the jungles and deserts along the way,\u201d according to the majority report from the <a href=\"https:\/\/homeland.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Phase-3-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Committee on Homeland Security<\/a> last October.<\/p>\n<p>Todd Bensman, a writer with the conservative <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Immigration Studies<\/a> who has traveled extensively along the northward immigration routes, said travelers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.int\/news\/latest-migrant-tragedy-texas-highlights-crisis-along-deadliest-migration-land-route\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frequently victimized<\/a> and crime has exploded along with record increases in the numbers of people on the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not all about killings \u2014 they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/rapes-of-u-s-bound-migrants-make-a-treacherous-route-even-more-dangerous-11630956539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">getting raped<\/a> and robbed, too,\u201d Bensman said. \u201cThere are loan sharks who let victims know they know where family members are located \u2014 that\u2019s a crime. And people are desperate, they are forced to steal food, there have been assaults on police, and recently a camp in Panama was burned down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Criminologists say part of the problem in measuring migrant-related crime in the United States is \u201csanctuary\u201d jurisdictions that do not cooperate with federal immigration agencies. Sanctuary enforcement is also not a category traditionally tracked by law enforcement agencies. Nowrasteh said that several years ago he sent Freedom of Information Act requests to all 50 states seeking data on crimes committed by or on immigrants and only Texas offered a response. Since then, he believes, Georgia has begun amassing statistics, but the state has not yet issued any public reports.<\/p>\n<p>Grim arithmetic suggests the human costs of the unprecedented tide of illegal immigration under Biden, according to multiple reports and congressional testimony. A case in point is the hundreds of thousands of \u201cunaccompanied alien children,\u201d the innocuous-sounding phrase employed by a bureaucracy focused on avoiding the use of \u201cillegals\u201d who are newly arrived in the Biden years. Their oversight and handling have been mishandled, unintentionally or <a href=\"https:\/\/trac.syr.edu\/reports\/739\/\">otherwise<\/a>, by federal agencies, with the results of minors being trafficked and U.S. child labor laws being violated.<\/p>\n<p>A 2023 report by the conservative Heritage Foundation found arrests for human trafficking rose by 50 percent and convictions for the crime by 80 percent in federal fiscal year 2022. Of those trafficked, 72 percent were immigrants, most here illegally, the report concluded. There was bipartisan outrage last July when the Labor Department revealed illegal child labor cases had risen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/immigration\/labor-dept-says-number-children-found-working-illegally-up-44-percent-rcna96480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">44 percent in the last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The effects are seen across the United States. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/29\/nyc-neighborhood-overrun-by-broad-daylight-brothels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Post reports<\/a> that \u201ca street in Corona, Queens,\u201d has been transformed \u201cinto the city\u2019s boldest open-air market for sex \u2014 one so popular with pervs that it\u2019s advertised on YouTube. As police enforcement wanes and immigration surges nearly a dozen brothels have [also] set up shop along Roosevelt Avenue near Junction Boulevard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2022\/06\/16\/the_criminal_order_beneath_the_chaos_of_san_franciscos_tenderloin_836918.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RealClearInvestigations has reported<\/a> that many of the drug dealers who have turned San Francisco\u2019s Tenderloin district into an open-air drug market are migrants connected to Mexico\u2019s Sinaloa cartel. \u201cThe drug pushers are easy to spot: Unlike the users, they look healthy and wear clean clothes,\u201d Leighton Woodhouse reported. \u201cThey\u2019re almost universally young men, mostly Honduran (on the streets of San Francisco they\u2019re called \u2018Hondos\u2019).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Describing the plight of \u201ctwelve-year-old roofers in Florida and Tennessee,\u201d \u201cunderage slaughterhouse workers in Delaware, Mississippi and North Carolina,\u201d and \u201cchildren sawing planks of wood on overnight shifts in South Dakota,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/25\/us\/unaccompanied-migrant-child-workers-exploitation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the New York Times has reported<\/a> that \u201cmigrant children, who have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/02\/us\/politics\/border-migrant-families-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coming into the United States<\/a> without their parents in record numbers, are ending up in some of the most punishing jobs in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millions of migrants working for legal businesses are also breaking the law. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2022\/06\/29\/willful_blindness_feds_ignore_massive_illegal_alien_id_theft_plaguing_americans_as_us_coffers_fill_839815.html#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RCI has reported<\/a> that \u201cthe historic surge of illegal immigrants across America\u2019s southern border is fueling a hidden crime spree few in Washington seem willing or able to address: widespread identity theft victimizing unwitting Americans perpetrated by migrants who need U.S. credentials to work. \u2026 Federal authorities have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/terence-p-jeffrey\/irs-documented-13m-identity-thefts-illegal-aliens-cant-say-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">well over<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/oact\/NOTES\/pdf_notes\/note151.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 million<\/a> are using Social Security numbers belonging to someone else \u2014 i.e. stolen or \u2018shared\u2019 with a relative or acquaintance \u2014 or numbers that are fabricated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such theft implicates many American citizens, who hire migrants with no such documents or who turn a blind eye to potentially stolen IDs.<\/p>\n<p>Other Americans fall victim to crime connected to migration. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2023\/12\/22\/fact-sheet-dhs-front-lines-combating-illicit-opioids-including-fentanyl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seizures of fentanyl<\/a>, the synthetic painkiller the Centers for Disease Control blamed for a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">112<\/a>,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2023\/12\/28\/fentanyl-crisis-addiction-overdose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overdose deaths in 2023<\/a>, have skyrocketed. In 2021, law enforcement agencies seized some 11.2 thousand pounds of the lethal drug, but in just two years the Chinese-abetted trade through Mexico has more than doubled, hitting 27,000 pounds last year, according to Customs and Border Patrol figures. Some immigration and drug experts believe the vast numbers of people crossing the border make it harder to interdict the flow of narcotics into the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Just two days before Biden used the description of \u201cillegal\u201d to describe Jose Antonio Ibarra, the 26-year-old suspected Venezuelan gang member accused of killing Laken Riley after entering the U.S. illegally in Texas in 2022, the Texas Department of Public Safety heralded the third anniversary of its \u201cOperation Lone Star.\u201d The figures offered a window into the law enforcement situation on what is something like Ground Zero of the illegal immigration to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott described the operation as a direct consequence of the Biden administration\u2019s deliberate failure to enforce existing U.S. immigration law. As of March, <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/texas-marks-third-anniversary-of-operation-lone-star-1#:~:text=Since%20the%20launch%20of%20Operation%20Lone%20Star%2C%20the,lethal%20doses%20of%20fentanyl%20during%20this%20border%20mission.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Operation Lone Star<\/a> has resulted in \u201cover 503,800 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 40,400 criminal arrests, with more than 36,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-spike-in-florida-coronavirus-cases-despite-no-mask-mandate\/\" title=\"No Spike in Florida Coronavirus Cases Despite No Mask Mandate\">100<\/a> felony charges,\u201d the state\u2019s Department of Public Safety said. In addition, authorities reported seizing \u201cover 469 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Disputed, and Elusive, Crime Stats<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite all this, many immigration advocates continue to insist that immigrants tend to commit crimes at a lower rate than native-born Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The news and social media may be filled with headline-grabbing incidents, such as the gang of migrants in New York City who beat police officers in Times Square. But Nan Wu, research director of the liberal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Immigration Council<\/a>, told RCI the idea the U.S. is under some tidal crime wave due to the millions of illegal immigrants that have poured into the country during Biden\u2019s first term is a sensationalist myth.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most widely cited study of this kind is one based on Texas statistics from 2012 to 2018 published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.2014704117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelative to undocumented immigrants,\u201d the study reported, \u201cUS-born citizens are over 2 times more likely to be arrested for violent crimes, 2.5 times more likely to be arrested for drug crimes, and over 4 times more likely to be arrested for property crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But not all experts agree. Jason Richwine and Steven Caramota of CIS have criticized the PNAS study for failing to take into account further discoveries made by Texas authorities. \u201cIt is a misleading claim for several reasons,\u201d the two claimed. \u201cFirst, studies claiming it as fact are inescapably flawed, because most cities and states do not keep or publish data on criminals\u2019 immigration status, rendering suspect any conclusions drawn from what data is available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because the rates increase when the immigration status of people already serving time in Texas jails is taken into account, PNAS did not capture <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Oped\/Border-Crisis-and-Violent-Crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the full extent of the problem<\/a>, Richwine told RCI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have been way too hasty to draw firm conclusions because it\u2019s not clear that\u00a0Texas\u2019 [statistics] are definitive \u2014 it\u2019s not,\u201d he said. \u201cMore states should do what Texas does and Texas should be more transparent about what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to questions from RCI about migrant crime, nor did the Texas Department of Public Safety. But the dispute underscores the truth, acknowledged by all sides, that the paucity of reliable information leaves the only certain conclusion that there is more crime, regardless of perpetrator, because of the influx of more than 7 million people in three years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith law enforcement agencies in some cases it is willful blindness because they refuse to cooperate in any meaningful way,\u201d Mehlman said. \u201cIf they acknowledge the extent of the crime committed by illegal aliens, they would have to explain to the public why they continue to maintain sanctuary policies that shield criminal aliens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are also other problems with the widely cited figures on crime rates. One that plagues all crime research, as Herrmann told RCI, is that crimes are under-reported. Experts must rely on available law enforcement data and it is understood that for various reasons such figures are not comprehensive.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Intellectual Fraud\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The numbers are misleading for another reason, too. Border Patrol agents told RCI that most people coming across illegally give themselves up quickly, knowing that current policies will allow them to be released into the U.S. with an expectation they appear for a court date years later. But the border crossers looking to stay in the shadows are more likely to be those with criminal pasts or inclinations, meaning a higher percentage of them would be among the at least 1.6 million \u201cgotaways\u201d Customs and Border Protection estimates have entered the U.S. illegally since 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In fiscal 2023, it said in its most recent annual report, U.S. Enforcement and Removal Operations \u201cremoved 3,406 known or suspected gang members, an increase of 27.7% over FY2022, and 139 known or suspected terrorists, a 148.2% increase over FY2022.\u201d It elaborated: \u201cERO officials made 170,590 administrative arrests, representing a 19.5% increase in overall arrests from FY2022. Of the total arrests ICE conducted in FY2023, 43% of those arrested had criminal convictions or pending criminal charges, up from 32.5% in FY2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House Committee on Homeland Security majority report in October said Border Patrol had \u201crecorded 35,450 arrests of illegal aliens with criminal backgrounds, approximately 14,000 more total such arrests than the previous four fiscal years combined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those apprehended with prior convictions had been found to have committed a wide range of crimes including assault, battery, domestic violence, and other sexual offenses, as well as driving under the influence, burglary, and theft, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>The committee\u2019s Republican members were harshly critical of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas\u2019 handling of immigration, and their report was one more reason Mayorkas was impeached in February.<\/p>\n<p>The harsh reality, one often voiced by survivors \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2024\/03\/18\/laken_rileys_father_speaks_out_her_killer_might_not_have_been_here_had_we_had_secure_borders.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laken Riley\u2019s parents<\/a> among them \u2014 is that the horrific migrant crimes that draw national outrage might not have happened at all if laws were enforced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have no idea if that would have changed anything, but he\u2019s here illegally,\u201d Laken Riley\u2019s heartbroken father, Jason, said March 18. \u201cThat he might not have been here had we had secure borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of Riley\u2019s shocking abduction and killing, her parents and others were incredulous that a man with prior arrests since his illegal entry to the U.S. and alleged ties to Venezuelan criminal gangs was in the country at all.
