Newsom emphasized that this initiative enhances public safety \u2064and combats organized crime effectively.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gavin-newsom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Gavin Newsom\">Gavin Newsom<\/a> (D-CA) announced the installation of 480 surveillance cameras in Oakland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"California\">California<\/a>, and the East Bay as part of efforts to aid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Gavin Newsom\">law enforcement<\/a> in fighting crime.<\/p>\n<p>The advanced cameras from Flock Safety will allow police with the Oakland Police Department and the California Highway Patrol to identify vehicles and track the movements of cars attached to suspected criminals, according to the governor\u2019s office. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment marks another step forward in our commitment to bolstering public safety and tackling organized crime and roadway violence in Oakland and across California,\u201d Newsom said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2024\/03\/29\/flock-cameras-oakland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"statement\">statement<\/a> on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the installation of this 480 high-tech camera network, we\u2019re equipping law enforcement with the tools they need to effectively combat criminal activity and hold perpetrators accountable \u2014 building safer, stronger communities for all Californians,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In Oakland, 290 of the cameras set to be installed will be on and near streets, while the other 190 will be placed along state highways in the East Bay. The contract with Flock Safety is reportedly worth $1.6 million in its first year and $1.5 million for subsequent years.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing privacy concerns, Newsom said the network of cameras will only have a 28-day retention period, and footage from the cameras will not be given to third parties outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>state law enforcement<\/a>, among other privacy measures. <\/p>\n<p>Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao also praised the planned network of surveillance cameras, saying it help hold criminals accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImproving public safety and addressing quality of life issues in Oakland is my top priority,\u201d\u00a0Thao said in a statement. \u201cThis new camera network will help us stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>crime<\/a> and hold more suspects accountable.
