They argue against requirements such\u2062 as waiting periods and multiple informational sessions,\u200c deeming them unnecessary delays without medical justification. The lawsuit seeks \u200bto render restrictions\u200d beyond constitutional bounds unenforceable. Planned Parenthood and the ACLU are \u200bcontesting Ohio&#8217;s\u200b abortion laws, claiming they breach the updated state constitution safeguarding abortion rights. They oppose mandates like waiting periods and informational sessions, labeling them unjustified delays. The legal action aims to nullify restrictions exceeding constitutional limits.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/planned-parenthood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Planned Parenthood<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ACLU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>American Civil Liberties Union<\/a> filed a challenge to certain abortion laws in <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ohio\">Ohio<\/a> on Friday, its first since voters <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>enshrined abortion rights <\/a>in the state constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The new lawsuit claimed that requiring women to undergo a waiting period and multiple informational sessions about the medical risks of abortion was now violating the state\u2019s constitution and that requiring them to wait 24 hours is delaying \u201ctime-sensitive\u201d care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese laws are now in clear violation of the newly amended Ohio Constitution, which enshrines the explicit and fundamental right to abortion and forbids the state from burdening, prohibiting, penalizing, and interfering with access to abortion, and discriminating against abortion patients and providers,\u201d Jessie Hill, an attorney with the ACLU of Ohio, said in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acluohio.org\/en\/press-releases\/ohio-abortion-providers-file-lawsuit-challenging-24-hour-waiting-period-and-other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> press release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also states that the delays do not have any medical justification, or provide any significant health benefits. The ACLU and Planned Parenthood are now asking that restrictions on abortion outside of what\u2019s enshrined in the state constitution be permanently unenforceable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMainstream medical consensus dictates that the best medical practice is to provide patients with timely abortion care without any unnecessary delays and that mandatory waiting periods for abortion do not improve patient health,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acluohio.org\/sites\/default\/files\/field_documents\/complaint_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>challenge<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion providers also claim that the rules are unnecessary because they already inform patients of the risks of abortions before doing the procedure and are also insulting to patients because they already carefully considered their options before deciding to get the abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Under state law, the Ohio medical board can pull the license of any doctor who doesn\u2019t comply with the information sessions and the 24-hour waiting period. Doctors and patients can skip the requirements in emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio voters decided to protect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2570059\/ohioans-enshrine-abortion-right-in-state-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>abortion access<\/a> in the state last November, making it one of four states to amend their constitution to protect the procedure since 2022, when <em>Roe v.
