The Mayor has recently unveiled specific testing prerequisites for the autonomous vehicles.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Self-driving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"cars\">cars<\/a> will soon be zipping around <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"New York City\">New York City<\/a>, but they won\u2019t be without supervision. <\/p>\n<p>New York City Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/eric-adams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Eric Adams\">Eric Adams<\/a> has given his approval for several autonomous vehicle companies to deploy cars, but he is mandating these vehicles be accompanied by a person behind the wheel in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis technology is coming whether we like it or not, so we\u2019re going to make sure that we get it right,\u201d Adams said in a statement. \u201cIf we do, our streets can be safer, and our air could be cleaner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, he released requirements for companies to begin the testing phase of the autonomous vehicles driving on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Safety drivers will be required to submit background checks and complete training on the vehicles they will be testing. The city is also requiring companies to undergo a testing procedure and submit a safety plan before being deployed on the streets. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur streets are vibrant and energetic \u2014 and that\u2019s a great thing, but it also means that we need to have strong guardrails and requirements in place on any sort of autonomous vehicles,\u201d Adams said. <\/p>\n<p>There is no timetable set for when the cars will be deployed. <\/p>\n<p>The decision to incorporate autonomous vehicles on the road has been met with opposition by Danny Harris, executive director of the safe streets advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. He\u00a0claimed autonomous vehicles pose a risk to drivers\u2019 and pedestrians\u2019 safety. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers should not be lab rats for the car industry, which has already killed and injured thousands of our neighbors,\u201d Harris told the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/29\/business\/mayor-adams-green-lights-robotaxis-in-nyc-but-they-cant-be-driverless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>New York Post<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>Autonomous vehicles have already made their way to California, frustrating drivers in San Francisco due to their obstruction of buses and emergency vehicles and causing gridlock. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are safety concerns, too. A pedestrian was dragged nearly 20 feet by a self-driving General Motors Cruise, and a bicyclist was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/7\/24065063\/waymo-driverless-car-strikes-bicyclist-san-francisco-injuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>hit<\/a> by a Waymo vehicle last month. <\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Waymo received approval from California regulators to deploy self-driving cars in Los Angeles earlier this month.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York City will see self-driving cars on its streets soon, with Mayor Eric Adams&#8217; approval.
