Republicans express concerns about the safety \u200dof removing in-person screening requirements.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A majority of people support access to chemical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"abortion\">abortion<\/a> pills, but there is sharp division along <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"partisan\">partisan<\/a> lines over<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2938681\/supreme-court-appears-skeptical-scope-abortion-pill-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\" by-mail\"> by-mail<\/a> access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2934604\/mifepristone-science-what-to-know-about-the-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"partisan\">drugs<\/a>, according to a public opinion poll published Friday.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/most-americans-support-access-medication-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Axios-Ipso\"><em>Axios<\/em>-Ipsos<\/a> poll found that 72% of respondents say they support women obtaining chemical abortion drugs directly from their physician or a clinic, with 45% saying they strongly support in-person access to the abortion pills mifepristone and misoprostol.<\/p>\n<p>Access to abortion pills by mail, however, remains divided by party affiliation. Nearly three in four Democrats support the ability to obtain abortion pills through the mail, while nearly four in five Republicans oppose such access.<\/p>\n<p>The poll comes shortly after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Supreme Court\">Supreme Court<\/a> heard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/2930851\/mifepristone-on-trial-what-to-know-about-the-supreme-court-oral-arguments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"oral arguments\">oral arguments<\/a> in the case brought by the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Supreme Court\">Food and Drug Administration<\/a>\u2018s deregulation of mifepristone.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, over 20 years after the original approval of the drug, the FDA removed in-person screening requirements for patients to obtain the drug, allowing patients to receive mifepristone by mail after getting a prescription via a telemedicine appointment with a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/biden-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Biden Administration\">Biden administration<\/a> contends that telemedicine and by-mail sales of mifepristone were not only essential during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Biden Administration\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic but also removed costly barriers to healthcare access, such as taking time off from work for an in-person appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans argue that the removal of in-person screening requirements before obtaining a mifepristone prescription leaves women vulnerable to dangerous complications due to mistaking the age of the pregnancy or failure to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition.<\/p>\n<p>Mifepristone works by blocking the progestin receptors for the developing fetus, resulting in fetal death. Misoprostol is taken between 24 and 48 hours after mifepristone to induce uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy tissue, including the fetus and placenta.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of Republicans, 58%, support reverting regulations of abortion pills to pre-2021 approval, whereas only 41% of Democrats and 49% of independents would support in-person-only policies regulating mifepristone and misoprostol.<\/p>\n<p>Only 44% of respondents reported that they were familiar with the case before the Supreme Court over the FDA\u2019s approval of the drug, and only 15% responded that they were very familiar with the case.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also found that there is strong support for the FDA\u2019s credibility when it comes to the approval and regulation of medications in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 80% of people support the FDA having the ability to regulate the safety and efficacy of drugs on the market, and two-thirds say they trust the FDA \u201ca great deal or a fair amount\u201d about health information.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion remains a top concern for voters heading into the 2024 elections, with polling earlier this month finding that one in eight voters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2907515\/abortion-top-issue-2024-1-in-8-voters-new-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"consider\">consider<\/a> abortion policy their highest priority in selecting a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Axios<\/em>-Ipsos poll, 85% of Democrats and 61% of independents say a candidate who supported restricting abortion access would negatively influence their vote.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people favor access to abortion pills, but opinions diverge when it comes to mail-in access.
