Gun owners \u200bstatewide\u2064 will assemble on April 18 for Illinois Gun Owner\u2062 Lobby Day to push back against stricter gun control initiatives. Many of them are planning to march on Springfield.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gun owners from across Illinois are making plans to visit Illinois\u2019 capitol city April 18 to lobby lawmakers against more gun control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day has been going on for years. It brings gun owners from across the state for a series of speeches, a march through downtown Springfield to the Illinois State Capitol for a rally, and then time to lobby legislators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson said there\u2019s more interest, and legislators should take notice.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet them know that the gun owners are here, that they\u2019re watching, and they\u2019re going to be a force in the upcoming election,\u201d Pearson told The Center Square. \u201cWe want to let them know that we are here and that we\u2019re not going away and that our numbers are growing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are now 2,473,655 FOID card holders in Illinois. That\u2019s up nearly 60,000 from previous totals\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/isp.illinois.gov\/Foid\/Statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>reported<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Illinois State Police. The agency has not updated the total number of registrations for firearms, attachments and magazines that were banned in January 2023. The most recent numbers published were from Jan. 31, 2024, one month after the deadline to register banned items.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lobbying lawmakers is one avenue Pearson said people can take to address what they see as infringements on their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The courts are another, including requests for the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a challenge to Illinois\u2019 gun ban.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a case out of Maryland. We have a case coming out of California,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I\u2019m going to guess that they\u2019re going to combine all of these cases and hear them all at once.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, 29 states filed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/23\/23-879\/303213\/20240315150904039_23-879%20Amici%20Brief%20States%20Idaho%20et%20al%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>briefs<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with the U.S. Supreme Court urging them to take up the case challenging Illinois\u2019 gun and magazine ban.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The question presented is \u201cWhether Illinois\u2019 sweeping ban on common and long-lawful arms violates the Second Amendment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They argue the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruling in the Barnett v. Raoul gun ban challenge that arms owned by millions of law-abiding Americans are not arms \u201cdefies logic,\u201d and the Seventh Circuit\u2019s conclusion that \u201cmilitaristic\u201d weapons are not protected is \u201cwrong and illegal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pearson predicts the U.S. Supreme Court could decide to hear the case in May with a ruling sometime this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While there are pending lawsuits against the state\u2019s gun ban, there are also challenges against the state\u2019s FOID card. The FOID card, issued by Illinois State Police, is needed by Illinois residents to purchase or possess firearms or ammunition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pearson said a recent separate federal ruling that illegal immigrants can have firearms means FOID should be void.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a counter attack on the FOID card because if they don\u2019t need it, we don\u2019t need it,\u201d Pearson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Northern District of Illinois federal Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/illinois\/article_49e7f638-e885-11ee-885f-3f0ad881d5e1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ruled<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in favor of Heriberto Carbajal-Flores, a foreign national in the u.S. illegally who was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. She said the law violates the Second Amendment as applied in this one case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ISP confirmed that in order to get a FOID card, one has to attest that they are \u201cnot an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, the count of Firearm Owners ID card holders in Illinois surged.
