Benson allegedly provided\u2062 secret instructions to presume the validity\u200b of absentee voter signatures \u200bbefore the state&#8217;s presidential primary in February, which the RNC claims violates the Michigan Constitution and Election Law.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rnc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Republican National Committee\">Republican National Committee<\/a> filed a lawsuit Thursday against Democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Michigan\">Michigan<\/a> Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, claiming that she covertly tried to evade the state\u2019s absentee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"voting\">voting<\/a> protections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The RNC alleged that Benson gave secret instructions to Michigan election officials telling them they must presume whether an absentee voter\u2019s signature is valid ahead of the state\u2019s presidential primary in February. Benson\u2019s actions are in violation of the state\u2019s constitution, according to the committee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/prod-static.gop.com\/media\/documents\/Summonses_Verified_Complaint_and_Exhibits_1711648258.pdf\">lawsuit<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeculation, however, is incompatible with verification,\u201d the lawsuit stated. \u201cRequiring election officials to approve signatures with discrepancies based on mere speculation is completely inconsistent with the Michigan Constitution and the Michigan Election Law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s constitution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(xgr02wmsal5me2atdppk0ppq))\/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&#038;objectName=mcl-Article-II-4\">requires<\/a> election officials to verify absentee ballot voters\u2019 signatures by looking at their signatures on their registration records. If the signatures do not match, election officials have to notify the voter and give them enough time to correct the issue before their vote can be counted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJocelyn Benson is yet again working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stacey-abrams-nominated-for-nobel-peace-prize\/\" title=\"Stacey Abrams Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize\">undermine election integrity<\/a> by secretly instructing officials to disregard and circumvent these clear requirements,\u201d RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/gop.com\/press-release\/rnc-sues-michigan-secretary-of-state\/\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe RNC is suing Benson because Michiganders deserve election integrity, not underhanded Democrat schemes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reached out to Benson for comment. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/?utm_source=google&#038;utm_medium=cpc&#038;utm_campaign=WE_Search_Brand-Keyword_2024&#038;gad_source=1&#038;gclid=Cj0KCQjwqpSwBhClARIsADlZ_TnESl3zUoyAhoGMHoLon7bd8u9fxB-UZ2Nk7kkUhH3DuSZRJz-hHGQaAhvAEALw_wcB\" title=\"CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RNC filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/gop.com\/press-release\/rnc-files-voter-roll-maintenance-lawsuit-against-michigan-secretary-of-state\/\">separate lawsuit<\/a> against Benson earlier this month, which argued that the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-255000-excess-votes-for-biden-in-key-2020-states\/\" title=\"Report: 255,000 Excess Votes for Biden in Key 2020 States\">voter registration rolls<\/a> are inaccurate and that Benson needed to take steps to review them. In the suit, the RNC claimed that 53 of the swing state\u2019s 83 counties had more actively registered voters than there were residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The RNC\u2019s legal challenges against Benson come as Republicans ask swing states to crack down on election rules and restrictions ahead of the November election.
