Mangi&#8217;s associations \u200cwith anti-law\u200b enforcement\u200c and anti-Israel groups have sparked opposition, causing both Republicans and some Democrats to question his confirmation, leading to declining Democratic support.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The walls appear to be closing in for President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2018s chances to name the first Muslim American judge to a lifetime position on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/federal-court-is-fast-tracking-sidney-powells-request-for-a-forensic-exam-of-dominion-voting-machines\/\" title=\"Federal Court Is Fast-Tracking Sidney Powell\u2019s Request For A Forensic Exam Of Dominion Voting Machines\">federal appeals court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders of the largest police unions, representing 40,000 officers in Pennsylvania, penned a letter to Senate leadership Thursday calling for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to \u201cstand up for law enforcement\u201d and oppose the nomination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2932114\/biden-judicial-nominee-chances-dead-as-jimmy-hoffa-after-manchin-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Adeel Mangi\">Adeel Mangi<\/a> to the appeals court, citing his affiliation with an organization that called a person who murdered a police officer a \u201cfreedom fighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Circuit Judge Nominee Adeel Abdullah Mangi testifies during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on judicial nominations at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023. (Graeme Sloan\/Sipa USA)(Sipa via AP Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mangi has never been a judge at any level, but our opposition to his nomination is based on far more serious concerns,\u201d the police unions\u2019 leadership said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/press\/rep\/releases\/what-they-are-saying-pennsylvania-police-groups-oppose-adeel-mangi-for-the-third-circuit-for-ties-to-philly-cop-killer-organizations-represent-more-than-40000-pennsylvania-police-officers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"according\">according<\/a> to the letter, which was penned by three presidents of major police unions in Pennsylvania that oppose his nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of more than 40,000 members of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police, Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, and the Pennsylvania State Troopers Association, we\u2019re writing today to ask that you reject the nomination of Adeel A. Mangi,\u201d the group told Senate leader in the letter, including Schumer, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL), along with Pennsylvania Sens. John Fetterman (D) and Bob Casey (D).<\/p>\n<p>The state police union leaders cited the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner by Mumia Abu-Jamal in their letter. Mangi, a Muslim American partner at Patterson Belknap, has also served as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/who-advisory-board-member-says-china-still-engaged-in-massive-cover-up-involving-destroying-samples-silencing-scientists\/\" title=\"WHO Advisory Board Member Says China Still Engaged In \u2018Massive Cover-Up\u2019 Involving Destroying Samples, Silencing Scientists\">advisory board member<\/a> of the Alliance of Families for Justice, a group that praised Faulkner\u2019s killer as an \u201celder freedom fighter\u201d during a May 7, 2021, event.<\/p>\n<p>Faulkner was shot and killed by Abu-Jamal at an intersection less than a mile from where the 3rd Circuit hears cases in Philadelphia. The shooter was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death and is still living on death row.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, one of AFJ\u2019s founding board members, Kathy Boudin, pleaded guilty to a felony murder for her role in a Brinks armored truck robbery that resulted in the death of two police officers in 1981. Boudin is also the mother of Chesa Boudin, who became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2882970\/san-francisco-voters-oust-far-left-district-attorney-chesa-boudin-after-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"first San Francisco district attorney\">first San Francisco district attorney<\/a> to be recalled after relentless criticism for his soft-on-crime policies in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes one day after Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) became the third Democrat in the Senate to come out against Biden\u2019s nominee to be the first Muslim to serve on a federal appeals court.<\/p>\n<p>Rosen joined Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) in opposing Mangi, who has also received pushback in recent months from Senate Republicans due to his connections to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/2929588\/biden-judicial-nominees-chances-wane-senators-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"anti-law enforcement\">anti-law enforcement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2906704\/biden-judicial-pick-anti-israel-activists-event-sponsored-terrorism-tied-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"anti-Israel groups\">anti-Israel groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden nominee was only approved this year by the Judiciary Committee on an 11-10 party-line vote and faces mounting uncertainty because Democrats hold a slim 51-49 majority. No Republicans have voiced support for Mangi, but Democrats would need at least two Republicans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ky-gov-signs-bipartisan-law-limiting-no-knock-warrants\/\" title=\"Ky. gov. signs bipartisan law limiting no-knock warrants\">cross party lines<\/a> and back Mangi in order for him to get confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) defended Mangi in a passionate speech, where he said Mangi is a \u201cgreat American\u201d who has been under attack by \u201cbitter, twisted lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing you can do will ever, ever impinge the character of this great American. Nothing you can do will ever dim his love for this nation,\u201d Booker said.<\/p>\n<p>The New Jersey senator\u2019s speech came on the same day Mangi sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/716073446\/Adeel-Mangi-letter-to-Cory-Booker-3-21-24#from_embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"letter\">letter<\/a> to Booker in which he defended himself as never having \u201cinvolvement with or knowledge\u201d of the 2021 AFJ event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would\u00a0like to note that I emphatically disagree with the phrasing used with regard to\u00a0that event (\u2018elder\u00a0freedom fighters\u2019),\u201d Mangi said.\u00a0\u201cI have never and would never use such\u00a0phrasing to refer to anyone convicted\u00a0of crimes against law\u00a0enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Pennsylvania lawmakers Fetterman and Casey indicated they would support Mangi if his confirmation eventually came to a floor vote, with Fetterman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/pennsylvania\/casey-fetterman-adeel-mangi-biden-judge-muslim-american-20240321.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"describing\">describing<\/a> the concerns about the nominee as \u201cmisinformation and innuendo simply because of his faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate returns from recess on the afternoon of April 8, though Mangi\u2019s nomination has not yet been slated for a vote when lawmakers return.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell has called on Democrats to fill the appellate court vacancy with Zahid Quraishi, who was appointed to the District of New Jersey in 2021 by an 81-16 confirmation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_votes\/vote1171\/vote_117_1_00230.htm?congress=117&#038;session=1&#038;vote=00230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vote<\/a>, making him the first Muslim life-tenured federal judge.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the White House has continued to defend Mangi as a viable pick for the 3rd Circuit and has touted endorsements from seven law enforcement groups, including the National Organization of Black Women in Law Enforcement and the Anti-Defamation League.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mangi, who has lived the American Dream and proven his integrity, is being targeted by a malicious and debunked smear campaign solely because he would make history as the first Muslim to serve as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-ag-nominee-wont-commit-to-keeping-durham-as-special-counsel\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s AG nominee won\u2019t commit to keeping Durham as special counsel\">federal appellate judge<\/a>,\u201d White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden&#8217;s opportunity to appoint the first Muslim American judge to a federal appeals court seems to be dwindling.
