Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) introduced new <a href=\"https:\/\/sherrill.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/sherrill.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/SHERNJ_113_xml.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>legislation<\/a> on Thursday barring federal officials, including former President <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), from viewing classified documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/left-launches-effort-to-win-midterms-by-disqualifying-republicans-for-insurrection\/\" title=\"Left Launches Effort to Win Midterms by Disqualifying Republicans for 'Insurrection'\">bar elected officials<\/a> and candidates who are charged with certain criminal offenses from having access to classified information. The legislation does not name Trump or Menendez, but its implications would directly apply to both of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn public service there\u2019s nothing more important than upholding the oath of office and protecting our national security,\u201d Sherrill said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/sherrill.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/sherrill-announces-legislation-to-protect-sensitive-national-security-information-from-compromised-individuals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>. \u201cAs a Navy veteran and former prosecutor, I have zero tolerance for any betrayal of the public trust, especially when it comes to classified information and our national security.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While she did not specifically mention the senior senator from her state, she did say charges against Trump influenced her to draft the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m extremely concerned about recent charges against Donald Trump and his continued desire to access sensitive classified information, despite reckless actions, and serious criminal charges,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump faces a number of federal charges, including willful retention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-rips-trump-for-doing-the-same-thing-the-obama-administration-did\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Rips Trump For Doing The Same Thing The Obama Administration Did\">national defense information<\/a> and corruptly concealing a document or record. Menendez was indicted last fall for conspiracy to act as a foreign agent and acting as a foreign agent.
